Does anyone know of any recordings by trumpeter Chuck Findley other than
the Delos album "Trumpets No End" with Bobby Shew?

Chuck is the 'other' trumpet player with the GRP Allstars Big Band, behind
Arturo Sandoval and Randy Brecker. If you like Big Bands, you MUST check
out their CDs.

I've got all three of them. Dynamite! But, I want more of Chuck
Findley! Or another trumpeter that sounds much like him, Warren
Luening.

The only thing I have by him is the Miles Davis/Michel Legrand movie
soundtrack to "Dingo" from 1991. It is absolutely fabulous, and I
actually credit it with getting me into jazz, which led to my starting
trumpet three months ago! Miles plays on some 5 or 6 of the songs, and
Chuck on the rest. There are a few duets, which are out of this world!
(No, these are not subjective opinions at all ;=)...) But really, pick
it up! (I have never seen the movie; it's not available where I live in
Europe. I heard the story line is pretty thin, but the music is great.
Miles acts in it, by the way)

See you,
Derek

Also, I know he's played with Steely Dan, for example on Deacon Blues.

Now there's a name I haven't seen for a looooooonnnnng time!

I never missed the Wednesday evening Lawrence Welk Show, when Warren
played with the 'kiddie band'.

Some 'kiddies'!!! I'd give my right ball to play as an adult like
those 'kiddies' played then!

Does anyone know what musical activities Luening is currently involved
in?

Yes, He plays on the soundtrack to Dingo which features Miles DAvis but
Findley is featured on 8 of the 16 tracks including one on which he plays
with Miles.

Warren Leuning on the Lawrence Welk show? Kiddie band? I used to catch
snippets of L.W. while my parents watched, but I don't remember a kiddie
band. How old would that make Warren? I ran into him the first time on
a 1980 Singers Unlimited album entitled "Easy To Love" backed up by a
band led by Les Hooper. The band included players like Warren, Chuck
F., Bud Shank, Don Shelton, Pete Christlieb, Bill Watrous, and Bob
Magnusson. Too bad they didn't just do a big band album with those
guys. Every once in a while, I bump into a liner note credit for Warren
Leuning but I've never seen him really featured. He sure sounds a lot
like Chuck Findley.

I recall seeing Chuck playing in an episode of Molly Dodd. If they show
that sitcom on any cable stations you might run across him too.

Chuck did some fine work back in '76 and '77 on two outstanding
Steely Dan offerings, "The Royal Scam" and "Aja". I would highly
recommend these two...

Chuck has been a very active "session cat" and can probably be found as a
sideman on numerous recordings. I seem to remember he collaborated with
fusion saxophonist Tom Scott, for one.

You'll also find Chuck Findley on the Buddy Rich recording "Big Swing Face". He
takes a pretty mean solo on "Love For Sale".

He also plays with the GRP All-Star Big Band.

If you look in "Cadence" Jazz Magazine, I believe you will also find a Chuck
Findley/Bob Findley collaboration called "Relaxin'". I have not heard it, but
how bad could it be with those two?!

These sound like all L.A. studio cats.

It seems to me I've got several big band albums that amount to L.A.
sessions with guys like these. In fact, when the IAJE convention
was in Anaheim a couple of years ago, there were several big band
gigs that featured the same sets of guys, like Christlieb and Findley
(bands put together by leaders like Bill Watrous and Louie Belson).

Yes - I'm sure he's on many others as well, but he is prominently featured
on Don Menza's recording "Horn of Plenty" It's a sextet and all the horns
do lots of soloing - you might want to check it out. I'm not sure of the
label or availability - if you have trouble finding it, e-mail me.

take care,

Thanks Joe! Dingo was a really crappy movie storywise (and the director
didn't bother to synchronize the fingerings) but there are some
unforgettable tunes...I was wondering who was playing.

And he was featured on some tracks of Peter Herbolzheimer's 'Bandfire'
album. It features some, for my own taste, slightly too soft instrumental
pop/funk songs and some Earth, Wind & Fire covers.

Best wishes,
