My dad seems to remember reading an interview in Down Beat in which Elvin
Jones discussed the era's (late 60's) "great" rock drummers... Mitch
Mitchell, John Bonham, Ginger Baker, etc.
Any help is appreciated... I wish there were Downbeat archives online!

Elvin did have a "drum battle" with Baker. I don't remember the details, but
I think they each used the same band. Jones went into it with little respect
for Baker, but came out with a lot.

If I recall correctly, Joachim Berendt mentions this in the early
1970's version of "The Jazz Book" - unfortunately, I've lent 2 copies
of this out and had them disappear. Now I'm stuck with the 1962
version only. But that book would be a good place to find commentary
on the rock players like Mitchell, Baker and Moon in a jazz light.

I really wish there were a Downbeat archives online, too. It would be very
great as a reference.

I remember a Blindfold Test in which Elvin was played several rock
drummers. I don't think Bonham was known yet, but the list did include
Ginger Baker, whom he put down, and Keith Moon, who impressed him a lot.

I recall Elvin and Baker getting into a public flame war once, with Elvin
saying "they should make him an astronaut so we could lose his ass" about
Baker, and Baker saying, "Elvin was ok until he started playing that no-time
shit". Then they had a drum battle somewhere, and after that, they
were friendly and complimentary towards each other.

Anyone know what he thought of Mitch Mitchell? He always sounded to
me like the rock drummer from that era most influenced by Elvin.

Matt,
Yeah, that's exactly my reason for asking. Mitchell is without a doubt my
favorite drummer, and I'd heard he cited Elvin as his primary influence
since he began drumming. I'm dying to hear what Elvin thinks as, now that
I've gotten into 'Trane, he's right up there with Mitch on my list.

The ITM Ginger Baker release "The Album" actually has a recording of this drum
duel, if you want to judge for yourself....
