What is "fusion" and "funk" code for?

i picked this album up out of respect to herbie, scofield, holland,
and brecker, but i feel like this all-star lineup just don't play
together very well.
their take on playing contemporary tunes is interesting, and while
sometimes they fall on their face like in _all apologies_,
there are some definite shining, happenning moments in this album.
i'm especially bothered by the seemingly conflicting playing styles
between scofield and brecker.
