I just heard that Francis Paudras, who befriended Bud Powell in Paris
committed suicide one or two months ago. I hadn't read anything about
it. An online search of the New York Times didn't produce any
articles. Does anyone have any information about this?

Yes. An lengthy obituary was published in the New Your Times of December 14,
1997. Briefly, it says that he died November 26 (1977) at his castle in
Antigny, France atr age 62. It says he committed suicide but gives no
specifics. It goes on to give details of hid friendship with Powell. After
Powell's daath Paudras went on to become a friend and supporter of other
musicians inclusing BIll Evans.
Actually I'm glad I looked this up, since the obituary also mentions that
Paudras write a bok about his experiences with Bud Powell, titled "La Danse des
Infideles," in 1986, adn that an English translation is being published "this
spring". It's now spring; has anyone seen this book?

I haven't seen this yet, but it is apparently now available (from Da Capo).
I've ordered a copy.

A brief notice appeared in the Boston Globe, his estate must have a ton of
private jazz tapes and videos, including the Bill Evans
engagement at Ronnie Scotts in July /August 1980.

The English translation (DaCapo) is out - saw it in a bookstore last

rmb a week or two ago.

In the new French translation of "Dance Of The Infidels" by Francis Paudras it says in the introduction that he committed suicide on November 27,1997 in his home in Antigny, France.
No other details are given.
If you are into Bud Powell you must read this book. I think it is great. This new English edition is edited by Warren Bernhart,a fine pianist. This portrait of Bud Powell is published by Da Capo Press.

Best wishes,

I found a copy at Boarders Books.
I think it is a fine book, especially as it tells about his life in Paris which I knew very little about.
