Recently I heard a live performance of Straight No Chaser and 'Round Midnight
by a vocal group. I had no idea these had lyics! Is there a recorded vocal
version of either tune? Also, will someone please post the lyrics?
Thanks in advance.

There are probably lots of recorded vocal versions of 'Round Midnight, but
my favorites are Ella Fitzgerald's and New York Voices'. The only
recorded version of Straight No Chaser that I'm familiar with is done by
Carmen McRae on "Carmen Sings Monk."

An album you should get is Carmen Sings Monk, by Carmen McRae (RCA), a
beautiful album with her doing 13 vocal versions of Monk tunes. About
half the lyrics are written by Jon Hendricks. I suspect words to
Monk's tunes were added later by people not directly working with him. (An
exception to this may be Round Midnight, which on the McRae album is
listed as being written by Monk, Cootie Williams and Bernie Hanighen.
I've seen Hanighen listed on many instrumental versions of this song -
did he do the lyrics? When?)

Betty Carter does Round Midnight on an album I have somewhere, and she
introduces the lyrics as a new version by Babs Gonzales, different from
the ones Hanighen (I guess) wrote.

Jon Hendricks appears on Underground, the late '60s Monk album, singing
In Walked Bud. The liner notes say he made up the words on the spot.
(This is the only instance I've heard of where Monk plays with a
singer, he probably scared the others.)

It seems most words to Monk songs are a vocalese sort of thing, done later
and often about him. His songs work really well with lyrics, I think,
and it's too bad more singers don't do them. I've always wanted to hear
Sinatra do Round Midnight.

Hendricks tells a story that Monk came to him and said, "You're the only
mother I want to write lyrics to my music!" Of course, "mother" was only
half of what he actually said.

Hendricks tells the story that he wasn't slated to be
on that recording and had just dropped in to check it out.
He was pressed into singing and jokes "I still haven't
gotten paid"!

Carmen does a nice job on that album, though she does not
always quite rise to the challenge of singing Monk's
melodies, which tend to be a bit angular for most singers.

Rare Silk recorded a different set of lyrics (or maybe
a never-sung second verse) to 'Round Midnight that were
terrific. I think it was on their first album (New Weave).

MONK LYRICS (man, i'm spending way too much time on the 'net!)
Source: Vocal Real Book (so beware of clammage)
Straight No Chaser (Monk, lyrics by Eddie Jefferson)
I came to this town was tired of chasin' around
I came to get straight I had to get straight had no time to wait
God knows I had to make haste
Do things a movin' no time for doodlin'
I used to wonder how when ev'ry thin seemed profound with piddlin'
I came to get straight
2nd verse
It's straighten up time no time for chasin' a-round
I gotta keep up I gotta keep you wan(na) know why
Because they're waiting in line
All in a hurry no time to worry you see to me
It really matters what comes it really does and so
I'm chasin' it straight

Hmmm, not sure Eddie captured what Monk had in mind....

ROUND MIDNIGHT (Monk, Williams, & Hanighen)
It begins to tell, 'round midnight, 'round midnight
I do pretty well 'til after sun-down
Suppertime i'm feelin' sad
But it really gets bad 'round midnight

Mem-'ries always start RM, RM
Haven't got the heart to stand thes mem-'ries
When my heart is still with you
And old midnight knows it too

Br: When some quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending?
Darling I need you (but)
Lately I find
You're out of my arms
And I'm out of my mind
Let our love take wing some midnight, RM
Let the angesl sing for you're returning
Let our love be safe and sound
When old midnight come around

First, lets all pause a moment to mourn the passing of Carmen MacRae.

An interesting side note to this discussion:
Check out Carmen's "The Ballad of Theloneous Monk" on "The Great American
Songbook". It's hilarious, and will delight all Monk fans.

I've heard Larry Gale, Monk's old bass player, sing the verse to
this tune. Don't remember the words, but they're out there....
