I'd like to hear some comments on Rivers' Bluenote recordings. I am
disapointed that we haven't seen anything reissued under his name yet (except
for "Dimensions and Extensions" back in 1986). I passed up a French prsssing
of "Fuschia Swing Song" about 10 years ago and have been kicking myself ever
since. Lately, I've gone back and listened to some of my Rivers' albums:
"Streams", "The Quest" and "Capricorn Rising" (with Don Pullen) are all great.
Hearing him on the new Reggie Workman recording left me wanting to hear more.
I think it's time for a Rivers' Bluenote Mosaic Box.

I've tried to post this twice before and it never made it.

About Sam Rivers, I remember having been to a concert (in Nov 1969,
in Paris) where he played in the Cecil Taylor group, along with Jimmy
Lyons; does there exist some recordings of this CT group ?

BTW, the first part of the concert was Miles Davis...

i totally agree with you. everytime i talk with the folks at mosaic,
i ask about a sam rivers box set of his bluenote recordings and they always
say they would like to. however, they never give me a definite confirmation.
i'm hoping that the next batch of connosieur series will have at least one of
his important bluenote records. btw, you can get fuschia swing as an import
at tower for about 25.00. maybe if we pester bluenote enough, they will reissuesome sam rivers.

I have the original 3 LP set of Cecil with Sam. It was released on the
Shandar label.

Every time I call/write/order from Mosaic, I always suggest something for
a future set or two, and one is always a Sam Rivers Blue Note set. Andrew
Hill is another one I used to suggest, and look what happened! So you
should all thank me for that one :-)

I believe the (French) Shandar LPs were also released as 3 individual
LPs as "Nights de l'Fondation Maeght" - I may have spelled that
wrong. They may be on European CDs as well; the last used 3 LP sets
I've seen sold between US$40 to $60!

LPs of Rivers on Blue Note: "Fuschia Swing Song (4181?)"; "Contours"
(4206), "A New Conception" (4249?). Then, much later, "Dimensions And
Extensions" was first packaged as part of the mid-70s BN 2LP reissue
series (complete with dull brown packaging). Only in the mid-late 80s
was "Dimensions...." issued in its originally intended single LP
package.
Then in the early 70s, Rivers went to ABC/Impulse - "Streams" (live),
"Crystals", and "Sizzle" are three titles I know of. In the mid-70s
he began working regularly with Dave Holland - they did 2 duet LPs
for Paul Bley's New York label, Improvising Artists (some IA items
are now on CD). Rivers released recordings on several small European
labels - "The Quest" was on Red Records Italy, later issued in the
USA on Pausa. "Paragon" (with Holland and Altschul) was issued on
a French label, Fluid(?!) Records. Then there was his Tomato LP
with Holland, Thurman Barker and (the late?) Joe Daley on tuba,
follwed by his ECM LP, "Contrasts", with George Lewis replacing
Daley (Daley didn't die in '79/80, by the way). Next, Rivers recorded
one LP with his "Winds of Manhattan" group on Black Saint. Then he
disappeared for a while, only recording one CD (on Timeless with an
electric guitar, electric bass, and drums) in '83 or so. Only
recently, it seems, is Rivers coming back to some notice, including
his work on the Postcards label on the firt Reggie Workman, and on
the (drummer) Bruce Ditmas CDs for the label.

Oh, I forgot to mention the Studio Rivbea that he and his wife ran
in the mid 70s. Live sessions from that time are documented on the
"Wildflowers" series of recordings on Casablanca/Douglas. Did I
miss any other Rivers?

Yes. Prestege reissued a three LP set of a performance of that group (w
Cyrille as well). It was titled "The Great Concert of Cecil Taylor". I don't
know the label it was originally on.

I forgot to mention that Blue Note's next set of reissues will also
include Tony Williams' "Life Time." I just got this on a Japanese
import, and it contains some excellent Rivers. He plays in a trio
setting with Williams and Gary Peacock on bass, and in a quartet with
those two and Richard Davis added on bass. Its a bit more free and edgy
than the music on Fuchsia Swing Song, but is great. I would compare it
with Rivers' work on Williams' album "Spring." Also on "Life Time"
are Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Bobby Hutcherson, but none of them
appear with Rivers.

I like many of Rivers' recordings, though I'm less drawn to something like
"streams" (Impulse), with very long, very free excursions, than to
something like "Extensions & Dimensions" (BN), which strikes me as more
structured.

So, I'd like some feedback on Fuschia Swing Song. What is it like? Any
word on a Connoissuer reissue, or is it so good that I should lay out the
extra cash and go for the Japanese import now?

Here's the address of Repertoire Records:
Gaensemarkt 24

This is from a 1994 catalogue, which, however, does not list the Rivers'
CD, so it may be out of print.

I'd recommend shelling out the extra money and getting it from Japan.
There's no word, to my knowledge, of any plans to reissue any Sam Rivers
Blue Note material besides "Dimensions and Extensions" which should be
out in January or February. "Fuchsia Swing Song" is one of Rivers' best
recordings, better than "Dimensions and Extensions." You will find it
more structured than "Streams" because of the steady pulse of the rhythm
section (Ron Carter and Tony Williams). Jaki Byard contributes some
excellent solos as well, drawing on his eclectic influences. Rivers is
also at the top of his game, staying on tenor throughout the set. As far as
I'm concerned, this album
includes some of his best playing, as well as 6 original compositions.
