Always Born (Silkheart 115) - CG Quartet featuring John Tchicai
Homeless (Silkheart 116) - CG Trio
Spirits Before (Silkheart 117) - CG Trio
His first three recordings, all done in April of 1988. The one with Tchicai on a second sax is somewhat disappointing. I haven't been able to find Homeless, but Spirits Before is very good.
Touchin' On Trane (FMP48) - Gayle/William Parker/Rashied Ali - As was noted in a previous posting, this is not what you'd normally expect from Gayle. It's much calmer, more coherent, even melodic at times. In other words it's similar to Late Coltrane. OK, so it's not all that calm.
Repent (Knitting factory Works 122) - Gayle with Trio - Recorded Live At the
Knitting Factory in NYC early 1992. Two long pieces. Very good.
Translations (Silkheart 134) - CG Quartet
Raining Fire (Silkheart 137) - CG Quartet
Recorded January 1993. The second is much superior, probably his best to this
point. The liner notes say that a third CD was being cansidered for release
from these sessions, but I don't believe it ever came out.
More Live At The Knitting factory (Knitting Factory Works 137) 2CDs -CG Quartet
Recorded live, February 1993. My personal favorite. Pretty much totally
out of control.
Consecration (Black Saint) - CG Quartet -Recorded April 93. Another Great One.
Kingdom Come (Knitting factory Works 157) - CG With Sunny Murray & William
Parker. Studio and live recordings from 1994. features Gayle on piano for
three numbers, two of them solo. His piano playing is wonderful and bizarre.
Unto I AM (AKA Unto One A.M., as my wife calls it) (Victo 032) - Gayle solo
Gayle plays drums, piano, tenor sax and bass clarinet, Plus he sings, kind
of. Recorded in Montreal September 3, 1994, so it's not a live recording,
as someone had guessed it would be.
The liner notes to Consecration mention three recordings for Gazell, but I
believe the author was refering to the first three Silkheart recordings,
Silkheart being "represented in the US by Gazell Productions" according
to the info on the later Silkheart releases. If anyone has any additions
please post.

what I wanted to say was that the first Album with Tchicai on a
second sax was disappointing, that I haven't been able to find
Homeless and that Spirits Before is very good.
The Touchin' On Trane Album is good, but not his usual
style. It's much calmer, even melodic at times, somewhat
similar to late Coltrane, so I guess it's not all that
mellow or anything.
I think everything else was ok. Please post any additions.
Has he ever played on sessions for other people?

Charles was born and grew up in buffalo, then moved to new york city in
the late 50's. I spoke with him last year when he was in Toronto during
the jazz festival and he often, almost casually, referred to mad
sessions in the lofts of folks like marzette watts and milford graves
and spoke of coltrane as 'dear john'. He's played around for years and
apparently recorded some material in the early 1980's before the folks
at Silkheart 'did the right thing' and recorded that massive session in
1988.

ps: the Bicto cd (unto I AM) is phenomenal. Charles on piano, turning
out the gospel truth in a particularly uncompromising fashion.
: to the info on the later Silkheart releases. If anyone has any additions
: please post.
======Live At Disobey (Blast First cd - the number's at home). Live 1984 set.
Excellent!
