I am looking for a John Zorn discography including groups
(Painkiller, Naked City, etc...). This is what I am aware of:
The Big Gundown
Spillane
Spy vs. Spy
Filmworks 1986-90
Yankees
Elegy
Naked City
Torture Garden*
(Self Titled CD)
Heretic Soundtrack*
Painkiller
Guts of a Virgin*
Buried Secrets
Locus Solus
Live CD (not sure of title)*
* denotes import
Any additions to this list would be greatly appreciated.

This is a double CD released on Hat Hut Records in Switzerland. The first CD is a studio recording while the second is a live recording. The music is improvised after game rules. I bought the CD here in Trondheim, Norway. I think it should be possible to get records from Hat Hut in USA.
Gorm
Actually, it's called "Voodoo". Ray Drummond is the bassist, not Workman.
Great album.

This question keeps getting asked here. Ed Price, whose last known email adress
(epr...@sybase.com) now bounces mail, had a very complete discography. Unfortunately,
I changed companies and no longer have an electronic copy. Someone on the net who
saved this should post it.
Jeff
This is called VOODOO and has Ray Drummond on bass.

============================================================================
Hey, now everyone can pretend (like me) to be an expert on Zorn, with this
clever invention I like to call a "Zorn discography"! I've made a vague
attempt at chronological ordering by year (by date of recording, not
release). Any help with this list is, of course, appreciated. BTW, I
didn't list "Stonehenge" cuz that's just too vague a connection, but I
considered it. I should probably indicate what Zorn's role is on these
things -- producer, composer, arranger, player, mixer, thanked-in-liner-
notes, etc. :-)
Here's what it looks like so far (still needs lots of work, clearly):

LIVE TAPES
Numerous recordings exist. I wish I had some. At least one Pain Killer
videotape exists. At least four Naked City recordings exist (two audio,
two video -- there is a possibility that videotapes of the last two gigs
may be released legitimately). The entire Radical New Jewish Culture
series at the Knitting Factory was taped. A Zorn/Frith/Ostertag recording
exists. There are undoubtedly lots more. Feel free to torture me by
telling me all about them. Anyone got any Slan??

I'm not Glenn, but Kristallnacht is released under Zorn's name, not Naked City.
I don't have it here with me, but I don't think Zorn plays on it.
Jeff
Trespass is a Ned Rothenburg record. Zorn plays duets
with Rothenburg on one cut. Fine stuff.
> A Confederacy of Dances I Einstein 1 [CD]
This is a compilation. Zorn's cut is a one-time group with
the usual NYC suspects. Good stuff as well.
Zorn also appears on God is My Co-pilot's _Speed Yr, Trip_. It's
a wonderful record, tho Zorn is largely redundant on it.
> LIVE TAPES
>... Anyone got any Slan??

A Slan video exists of a Knit Fac tour in SF. I've seen it (heh).
It's great.
Zorn also appears with the Spy vs. Spy group in the documentary
Put the Blood in the Music, on the NY downtown scene. The clip
is superior to any of the cuts on the record, sigh.
(I do have a copy of Put the Blood... it's been on PBS.)

Found it. Meanwhile in searching for it I compiled a file (about 44K) of
all sorts of reviews and references to Zorn works, from old postings to
the net and nm-list and other places. I was going to try to compile it
into an annotated discography but I really don't have the time and I'm
not that big a Zorn freak (I like him, but not enough to spend hours
editing a file about him...).
So, here's a repost of Ed's list, and, if anyone feels ambitious about
compiling a really large Zorn list with comments from various folks
please email me and I'll send you the "Zorn file" so we can work it up
into a more comprehensive overview than just a list of titles.
(Note: this was sent to me in email. Ed may have edited it more before
posting it to the net, so if anyone has a later version of this file
please email it to me.)
Ed called this "...the latest incarnation of my "Zorn list" (too terse to be
considered a real "discography")."

If people are really interested, I could provide much
more information having most of Zorn's records (I have
been collecting his records for the past years and I
have around 85 of them (for a total, I guess, of 90).
Let me know if it is worth.
PS: I just put the records not listed in Ed Price's list.

Lo Flux Tube: Old
(Earache)
Attitude: Lenny White
(Elektra - around mid-80's)
(a pure fusion Laswell produced stuff)
The participation of Zorn is limited to one song (with Laswell,
White, etc) and his musical intervention is 4/5 squeaks with
game calls !!! Even with earphones and being aware of when
Zorn is "playing", it requires all your mental capabilities
to recognize him ! Definitely a must for every afficionado of
Zorn's production.
WOW! You have 85 Zorn records?!? (I am bowing in reverence here.)
I for one would be "really interested" in seeing a more detailed Zorn
discography. Sounds like it would be a lot of work for you though...
Here are a few things Zorn was involved in that I didn't see posted:
Mr. Bungle (Warner Bros. 1991), producer, sax on "Love is a Fist".
Carl Stalling Project, producer and a great essay about Stalling's music
in the liner notes. (Warner Bros.??? 1991??? my copy is taped...)
Also worth mentioning that "Film Works" was re-released as "Film Works
1986-1990" (Elektra Nonesuch 1992). I'm not sure if all the tracks are
the same or not.
* records and tapes by John Zorn and/or his bands,
* records and tapes featuring John Zorn,
* records containing composition(s) by John Zorn,
* records containing arrangment(s) by John Zorn;
the following ones are not listed (I think this would deserve a
special section):
* records produced by John Zorn (with the exception of Rodan
by Michihiro Sato),
* records which include samples of Zorn's music (except when
explicitely mentionned, like with Alfred Harth and Bob
Ostertag),
* records having Zorn as a technical or musical consultant
* records with liner notes by John Zorn;
though arguable, I omitted most of the time the name of the com-
positions (not a very DC (discographicaly correct) choice, I
agree);
also, you won't find anything on extra material like (maybe in a
near future ?):
* books,
* magazines,
* interviews,
* concerts,
* videos,
* tee-shirts (even if Shimmy has some very interesting ones !).
It goes without saying that I would really appreciate any com-
ments, corrections and extra informations which could improve the
quality of this discography. Specially, if people could send me:
* missing records and tapes,
* wrong references (on dates, musicians, etc),
* extra references (for vinyl, CD, or different pressings);
for example, I am looking for informations on the following
records:
* TRIO: Zorn, Bradfield, Chadbourne (Ictus, 1979)
* EXPERIMENTAL PERFORMANCE: John Zorn, Takayanagi (Japanese ?)
* CYNICAL HYSTERIE HOUR: ??? (Eva)
* THE ART OF BEAUTIFUL BUTLING: Frith, Zorn, Sovetskoe (1stRec)
* OCTOBER MEETING 87 VOL. 1 & 2: ??? (Bimhuis 1 & 2)
* UNDERTOW: ??? (Enemy 107)
* REPLICANT WALK: Friction (Enemy 109)
* RADIO, VOL. 1 & 2: Naked City (Avant 3 & 5)
* ABSINTHE: Naked City (Avant 4)
* LO FLUX TUBE: Old (Earache)
* POSSESSION: God (Virgin)
(many of these references are listed in Ed Price's John Zorn
discography).

Cynical Hysterie Hour is CBS/Sony (!!!!) 24DH 5291. It is "recorded, arranged,
and composed by John Zorn in collaboration with the musicians involved." Lyrics
on the album (all in Japanese) are by Kiriko Kubo. It was recorded at Shelly Palmer
Studios in NYC in October 1988 and January 1989. For anyone not familiar with this
CD, it is cartoon music for a Japanese children's cartoon show. The spelling is a
little odd since another album I have for the same show (non-Zorn) calls it Cynical
Hysteria Hour. Also, I found a CD single from this album, also on CBS/Sony when in
Japan a few years ago.
Personnel: Bill Frisell: Electric guitar, banjo, acoustic guitar; Carol Emanuel,
harp; Wayne Horvitz, keyboards; Kermit Driscoll (spelled Doriscoll on the liner),
acoustic and electric bass; Bobby Previte, drums, percussion; Cyro Baptista,
Brazilian percussion, Christian Marclay, turntables; Arto Lindsay, electric guitar,
vocal; Robert Quine, electric guitar; Marc Ribot, electric guitar, banjo; Peter Scherer, keyboards; David Hofstra, acoustic and electric bass, tuba; Jill Jaffee, violin, viola; Maxine Neuman, cello; Ikue Mori, drum machine; Kiriko Kubo, vocal.
Four tracks, one for each cartoon, with multiple segments.
The October Meeting is a regular (?) avant-jazz festival
held in Amsterdam. I'm not sure Zorn plays on this. I have
access to copies, so holler if no one else posts about them.
> * UNDERTOW: ??? (Enemy 107)
This is under the band Blind Idiot God, a post-Branca NYC
guitar-based group. I have the lp, and I don't think Zorn
plays on the lp. He might play on the CD-only tracks.
> * REPLICANT WALK: Friction (Enemy 109)
This is a not-very-interesting prog-ish rock group with
Zorn playing on some cuts. I remember it as being plodding
and unremarkable.
> * POSSESSION: God (Virgin)
Another noisy rock group with guest spots by Zorn. Again
not very interesting.

Zorn does not appear on the CD. There is a Blind Idiot God EP
that has one track (Purged Specimen) with a Zorn appearance.
This same track has also appeared on the Japanese compilation
disk "Drive to Heaven, Welcome to Chaos," which was imported for
a brief time a few years ago.
Has anyone gotten email to Patrice? Mine keeps bouncing.

Sorry for that (and hope it will work better this time).

No, Zorn doesn't play on the lp. However, Enemy released a 3-song ep a bit
before the lp, and Zorn plays on one song (which, of course, is only on the
ep). I think the song's called "Purged Specimen", but I wouldn't bet my lunch
money on it.
