I found Joe Henderson - the Milestone Years box set used this weekend for a great price. I managed
to get the store to put it away for a week while I thought about dishing out the $100. I know this
is a great price but it seems like a lot of dough to be dishing out on one artist when there
are lots of artists for whom I don't have any recordings.

In any case, I was wondering if someone could comment on the sound quality of the set. As well,
I like to know what people's opinions are on Joe Henderson's playing from this time period.
Thanks for the help.

I didn't like this very much, being as how about half of the stuff was
pretty good Joe, say the first 4 discs or so. This includes some really
really great live stuff with Woody Shaw, and also some hot blowing with a
Japanese rhythm section at a club in Tokyo. He starts to get into
unsuccessful fusion gunk in the second 4 discs, and also does some pretty
slick'n'lite stuff approaching fuzak, and also some pretty weird stuff
with Alice Coltrane. Since my favorite Joe is 1st his 80s and later trio
stuff, and second his Blue Note stuff, I overall do not recommend this
box set. The stuff at the Lighthouse with Woody Shaw deserves to be
reissued by itself, and the Live in Japan as well. IMO an extremely
disappointing capital expenditure.

Hmmm. Thanks for the honesty. I agree that Joe's 80s recordings and Blue Notes are really great,
and interestingly enough, I was most interested in the recordinsg he did with Woody Shaw in the
Box Set. I have a version of Carribean Fire Dance recorded at the Lighthouse (???) with Shaw which
is great. From the quick glance which I took at the Box Set's contents, I didn't recognize many
of the albums from the Joe Henserson discs which I have seen in the racks at record stores. Are any
of the Henderson/Shaw recordings available outside of this set, or are there any plans for reissues?

While I agree about the assessment re the overall quality of the
Milestone set as being uneven, I think that there is more good stuff than
bad. Let me hasten to add that I don't own this CD boxed set, but I do
own most of the LPs on which this music was originally issued. Prior to
the live sets with Woody Shaw and the great Tokyo set, Joe made some
pretty good straightahead albums on Milestone including TETRAGON, THE
KICKER and POWER TO THE PEOPLE, the latter side while including Herbie
Hancock on electric piano, contains some fine stuff. I wholeheartedly
agree that the fusion, fuzak, jazzak, or whatever you wish to
pejoratively label it, is not worth pursuing. I also think that $100
while a lot better than full price retail, is still no great bargain for
8 CDs.

The Kicker and Multiple have been reissued by OJC as single discs, and
Tetragon was recently reissued with, I think, In Pursuit of Blackness, on
1 CD. Unfortunately at present the only way to get the really good stuff
is to pop for the set, but maybe as time goes by they'll reissue some of
the individual highlights.

Anyone read the Boston Sunday Globe yesterday? On the cover of the Arts
section, there was a picture captioned "Joe Henderson and First Saxman
Bill Clinton". I know Clinton is right, but unless Joe dyed his hair and
started playing alto without me knowing it, I'd say the caption is wrong!

Who _is_ playing with Bill there, anyway?

P.S. Henderson and Lovano to play the Regattabar, Boston, June 16. I guess
I'll see then if he really did dye his hair and/or play alto. ;)
