DON CHERRY - LIST OF ISSUED RECORDS
compiled by Johann Haidenbauer
*******************************************************************
This is the second posting of a list of released records by and
with Don Cherry. It is ordered chronologically where the year
refers, in general, to the recording date. All items are in LP
format unless stated otherwise. CD re-issues are preceeded by an
'*'. In those cases where the catalog numbers of LP and CD issue
are essentially the same it is not repeated after the *.
'(*)' means that this record has been re-issued on CD but I don't
know the label/catalog number. Releases from 1988 onwards are all
available as CDs and therefore no special indication is made.

Note that compilations of otherwise available material and
repackages are, in general, not included in this list.

These have been reissued on cd? Has anyone in the US seen this disc? Where
can I get it? What's the address of Storyville? Questions questions...

Does anybody know about his 1978 recording BROWN RICE? I know this album
was on the A&M label, and that discography didn't mention any A&M stuff.
If anyone has heard this, could one recommend something else in the same
vein? I recall really liking it when hearing it a few years back, but it
is out of print.

Cherry (tp), Gato Barbieri (ts), Karl Berger (vib), J.F. Jenny-Clark (b),
Jacques Thollot (d). The label claims the date was 1960, but it's more
likely '64 or '65. Much of the material is similar to "Complete
Communion". The disc is an anthology that includes live recordings by
Albert Ayler and John Handy as well. No audience can be heard on the
Cherry sides. If these are in fact part of another LP on your list, please
let me know.

Out of print, but very possibly still available as a cutout. It hasn't been too long ago that I saw a sealed cutout copy at a used store.

The recording is from 1976, with Billy Higgins, Charlie Haden, Frank
Lowe, Ricky Cherry, and Hakim Jamil. It was released on CD (A&M CD
0809) about 1989.

You might well enjoy the Codona albums: (COlin Walcott, DOn Cherry,
NAna Vasconcelos). There are three (Codona, Codona 2, Codona 3, on ECM): I
haven't heard 3, and thought 1 was a bit better than 2. Anyway, they
have the same "world music" focus that Brown Rice does. They're all
great musicians, and very sympatico on this project.

Another Don Cherry CD that I really like (even better than Brown Rice) is
Multikulti: I recommend checking it out.

Cherry also plays on Collin Walcott's "Grazing Dreams" album.
When Walcott died, he was replaced in Oregon by Trilok Gurtu, but
Codona was no longer. They should have recruited Manu Katche to
play drums, then they could've called it "Madona".
