I just got an LP on Saba by Nathan Davis "Hip Walk"... It is
outstanding! Now I want "Happy Girl"... if anyone knows where I could
get it please tell me... Also... What else has he done? What other
Nathan Davis records are there that I should try?

Nathan Davis appears on 2 Eric Dolphy recordings:

6/64: "Unrealized Tapes" (West Wind) with Donald Byrd, tp; Davis, ts;
Dolphy, as, bcl; Jack Dieval,p; Jacques Hess, b; Franco Monzecci, d;
Jacky Bambou, conga

6/64: "Naima" (West Wind) same as above except without Byrd.

I have "Unrealized Tapes" which is quite good. Davis plays a fairly
limited role, as Dolphy (deservedly) gets much of the solo space.

As far as I know, his recordings are;
Happy Girl (Saba 1965), Peace Treaty (SFP 1965), Hop Walk (Saba 1966),
Soul Eyes(Saba 1967), Rule of Freedom (Polydor 1968), Nathan Davis Live at
the Schola Cantorum (Edici 1970), Makatuka (Segue 1970), Sixth Sense of
the 11th House (Segue 1972), If (Tomorrow International 1976), I'm a Fool
to Want You (Tomorrow International 1995)

I only have "I'm a Fool to Want You". It is quite good. IMHO, I guess he
has been heavily influenced by John Coltrane.
He is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, the founder of the
annual 'University of Pittsburgh Jazz Seminar', and the author of
'Writings in Jazz' (Kendall/Hunt Publishing Co.)
Last summer I took his jazz class, it was great experiences for me.

My favorite Nathan Davis recording was made in '87 for the English
label Hot House, it's called "London by Night," he's with Kenny Drew,
Jimmy Woode and Al Levitt, and Dusko Goykovitch is on all but 3
cuts (two of them among my three favorites, I Thought About You,
there he's on sop., and But Beautiful -- my other favorite being
the title track, his comp., on which he's playing flute).
(HH 1004)

Also in the '80's he was the prime mover behind the Paris Reunion
Band which I mentioned in another post, the band did three recordings,
"For Klook" and "French Cooking," and I just bumped into the one I
couldn't remember the title of today, it's called "Jazz Buhne Ber-
lin '88" on the Amiga Jazz Label (#8 56 418), I have yet to find the
other two, but I don't have them on their original labels, I think my
copies are on Gazelle), anyway Davis is on all three.

Of the albums Seungbin Lee mentions, I've got three; my favorite is
"6th Sense in the 11th House," it's really fabulous, he's with Roland
Hanna (!), Richard Davis, and Alan Dawson, all comp's Davis originals
except The Shadow of Your Smile. (Seg-1002)

The copy I have of "Rules of Freedom" was a (Brit.) Hot House reissue from
'86 -- HH 1002 (Hot House is such a great label, I've got a marvelous Benny
Bailey recording on it *somewhere* ...), anyway, rhythm section composed
of Hampton Hawes, Jimmy Garrison and Art Taylor, all selections com-
posed by Davis.

Four of the tunes on "Peace Treaty" are by Davis, there's one by
Jimmy Woode, and Monk's Ruby My Dear. Rounding out the sextet are:
Woody Shaw, Jean-Louis Chautemps (bar sax), Rene Urtreger, J. Woode,
and Kenny Clarke. (SFP 10.003)

Happy hunting,

Trina

P.S. I used to get Hot House lps from Cadence; I just looked up
Nathan Davis in my latest Cadence, he's conspicuously absent;
I also looked up Hot House in last March's Cadence, there
were only two (not anything great) lps listed. Wonder what's
happening?

These 2 releases are both from 6/11/64, and overlap in including
Springtime. Byrd is thus on both of these, although I guess he sat out on
Naima and Ode to Charlie Parker, the other performances included on
"Naima".

Supposedly there are tapes of lots more from the Paris days!

I recently found A Nathan Davis album entitled (I Think)Suite for Martin Luther
King. It was sealed so I traded it to a dealer friend of mine. I forget the
Label . I didn't nbotice the title on any of your lists so I thought I would
mention it.

In addition to those albums I've already seen mentioned, I know of:

Nathan Davis - The Nathan Davis Sextet; EPM FDC 5529 (CD)

Paris Reunion Band - Live at Theaterhaus, Stuttgart, W. Germany;
Proscenium 10004 (Video Cassette)

And I believe Nathan is on this album:

Jef Gilson - A Gaveau; SFP 10.004

Just came home with it from a trip to SF... Very good LP... My
favorite track so far is the opening one...

That sounds like a winning line-up to me...

but are they the ones you have to buy a subscription to their magazine
to get their records... or a.) am I misinformed or b.) thinking of
another company?

Yes, Cadence really has vinyl. You don't have to buy a subscription to
the magazine to buy CDs/LPs/books from them. However, they do charge
non-subscribers a $2.50 service charge, plus the usual S&H charge, whereas
subscribers only have to pay the usual S&H charge.

Somewhat misinformed, but you probably are thinking of Cadence.

1. Cadence does still carry a lot of vinyl
2. You don't have to subscribe to order from them, but the catalog is
part of the magazine, so the easiest way to get a current catalog is
to subscribe.
3. The catalog is on the web also. Sorry, I don't have the URL handy
(I prefer the print version)
4. Non-subscribers do pay a $2.50 service charge on orders.
5.---> Cadence is, without a doubt, the best jazz magazine in the US
for reviews uninfluenced by advertising and long, interesting
interviews which are not really just press releases for the musicians.
I subscribe to 4 jazz mags, and if I had to cut back to only one, there
is no doubt that it would be Cadence.

I tried posting this a few days ago, apparently without success. One
more once...

There's a 1969 date by pianist Scott Bradford called "Rock Slides" (ABC
Probe CPLP 4509 S) on which Davis appears, along with Stu Martin on
drums and Philip Catherine on guitar. According to Bradford, the
session was a demo that ABC decided to release. Davis contributed two
originals--Mid Evil Dance and Kansas City Mascher--to the date.

Nathan Davis can also be found in the Arthur Blythe/Chico Freeman project
"Roots", which also features(d) Don Pullen (RIP); and Sam Rivers; in
particular, I am thinking of the album _Roots Salutes the Saxophone_,
which is a great recording of standards by this left-of-center group
of musicians.
