For those of you who are as insane in you love of this music as am I,
there is some great news from the folks at the Knitting Factory. They
have established the "Knit Classics" label. From their information-
"...dedicated to releasing improvised music, spoken word and humor
that is rare, historic and unique...

It looks like they have made some arrangement with Douglas records
to release many of their titles, including the Wildflower loft sessions
(3 cds in a box)...there will also be a re-release of some exisiting, but
also
what appears to be four new Ronald Shannon Jackson titles from the Decoding
Society archives in about three weeks.

This post is about the Survival Records label releases. This was the record
label
created by and featuring the legendary percussionist, Rashied Ali. These
are authorized
re-releases

Seven titles have been issued (I only yet purchased the first six
listed...but I will get that last one!)

Here is the information on each of the discs...the Knitting Factory Web site
does not provide all the information.

"Duo Exchange" - Frank Lowe (tenor sax, japanese flute & percussion) Ali
(drums & percussion) 1972

Exchange Part 2 15:09

"Swift are the Winds of Life" - Leroy Jenkins (violin) Ali (drums) 1975
The Past 7:24
It's For You 7:36
The Stomp 4:59
Swift are the Winds of Life 10:18

Stafford James (bass violin), Carlos Ward alto sax and flute), Ali (trap
drums set and conga drums) 1971

Blood on the Cross 7:09
Soul Eyes 9:19
Moon Flight 5:14

"N.Y. Ain't So Bad" Ali Plays the Blues featuring Royal Blue- Royal Blue
(vocal), Ali (drums), James Vass (alto sax and flute), Charles Eubanks
(piano), Benny Wilson (bass), Marvin Blackman (tenor sax and flute) 1975
New York Ain't So Bad 2:58
Boss Home Town Love 4:44
Moontipping 5:00
Everyday 4:46
Ladies and Gentleman Blues 5:37
Real Blues 3:33

"What Would it Be Without You" Joe Lee Wilson & Bond Street - Joe Lee
Wilson (vocal), Monty Waters,
Ryo Kawasaki, Ronnie Boykins, George Avaloz and Ali

The cds are regularly priced at $14.98 each. They are currently $12 each,
but are available at 3 for $30.

I placed my order on Thursday and received the discs on Saturday, via
Priority Mail.

The sound quality is really pretty good (they offer the info that the discs
were mastered from the orignal
analog tapes, but also provide the usual warning about sonic degradation due
to the orignal condion
of the tapes.)

It appears that the (minimal) original liner notes are reproduced.

The discs are available at www.knittingfactory.com/knitclassics

Now for the ususal disclaimer...I am in no way affiliated with The Knitting
Factory, Knit Media, Knitting Factory Works, Survival Records. I just love
the music and thought this might help some of you now...and all of us with
more releases in the future.

Regards to all,

Scott

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this news! I've been looking for
the Wildflowers set for awhile now, as it had been issued previously on a
French label. I can't wait to hear the music again (a friend bought all 5
albums when they first came out, so I didn't get them).

good news, though given most of those recording times they easily could
have put 2 albums on 1 cd.

Walter,

Totally agree...but this is Knit Media afterall. A rose is not without
thorns, whether it is $100
or $12 a dozen! ;>)

Have you seen their Archive listing for the KF Liquid Audio "listen and
purchase" library of
archived performances? "...many never before released, from the tape
archives of the Knitting
Factory club and directly from the artists" ?

Including performances from Ali's Alley:

- Ali and Sam Rivers duo
- Rev. Frank Wright All-Stars featuring James Blood Ulmer
- Ted Daniels and Energy 17 pc band
- Leon Thomas w/ Ali Trio featuring Don Pullen and Nick D'Geranimo
- The Quartet - Rashied Ali, James Blood Ulmer, Frank Wright and Amin Ali
- Ali Quintert w. Archie Shepp and Graham Haynes
- Ali Essentials featuring Charles Gayle, Sonelius Smit and Fred Hopkins

and a lot more.

Hope all is well.

Regards,

Scott
