i too love ed's playing, and ive met him on a few occasions. a nicer man
one could not hope to meet, very friendly and open to talk about justabout
anything. when i feel sad, i think to myself "i spoke to ed bickert" and i
start to feel better. a true master of his chosen instrument, this cannot
be denied. i asked him once why he chose a telecaster and he said he never
bothered to try anything else, this worked best for him. my fave bickert
cuts are from Barry Elmes cds "East/West" and "Climbing" and "Sackville" a
duet album with Don Thompson. cant wait to see him live again, saw him on
dini petty the other day accompanying shirley ickhart (sp)?.

Have a look at http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/5580 - there is at
least one Ed Bickert transcription there: "Everything I Love" from the
Paul Desmond CD "Pure Desmond".
Cheers,
Tony.

Dini Petty, eh? You never know. I think it's 'Eickhard;' I heard them on CBC
a couple of weeks ago. Great guitar job, wonderfully understated and always in
support of the song. I saw Bickert with Bill Mays a couple of times at the
Montreal here in Toronto. Ed starts to look a bit like your favourite
neighborhood Italian barber; and sometimes he comes across as almost too relaxed
- but he's always where the music is, and he seems to always know exactly what's
going on. On those occasions, however, he was very quiet (not that his Cube packs
much of a wallop anyway), and it seemed as if he'd rather not play a note if he
had the choice; no fluff coming from him, that's for sure. Gotta like the guy.

Talking about Ed being relaxed. I love it when drummers change or double
the tempo to a speed that is a lot faster than he likes to play at. His
reaction is just to shift into a kind of augnentation of the note values
which allows him to continue being ED.....instead of reving up with the
tempo change it's like he goes onto overdrive....Eights become quarters
and quarters half notes etc...and it all works out !...he is an amazing
musician and a very fine guitarist!
