I think there are probably more versions of "autumn leaves" than
there are autumn leaves in a New England town.

Speaking of Autumn Leaves: Is anyone familiar with the Sting song "Moon Over
Bourbon St."? I've always thought that the chorus of that song rips off a
couple of melody lines from Autumn Leaves.
Am I imagining this?

No, I've noticed that too.
I was kind of disappointed to see that particular song slammed in an otherwise
generally positive review of "Dream Of The Blue Turtles", or whatever album it
came out on. That tune has always been on my list of "songs I wish singers I
work with would do instead of the ones they actually do".
Back to "Autumn Leaves", though, my favorite recording is probably Miles Davis
from "Heard 'Round The World" - the 2-fer repackaging of "Live In Japan" and
"Live In Europe". I don't remember which of the two it actually appeared on;
I think it was the one with Wayne Shorter rather than Sam Rivers, because I am
remembering one quintessential Shorter lick from the saxophone solo. Miles'
solo on this was transcribed in "Down Beat", perhaps about three years ago.
But as usual with this group, the rhythm section is the real reason I like this
particular recording. There is the famous constantly shifting pulse, harmonic
freedom, and all that other stuff Herbie, Ron and Tony are famous for. In
fact, this particular recording kind of sticks out in my mind as perhaps the
classic example of their "standards" playing.
The only other recordings of "Autumn Leaves" memorable enough to come to mind
are Oscar Peterson's on "Blues Etude" (I think) with a killer groove (of
course) and Wynton Marsalis' on "Marsalis Standard Time Vol. 1", with the
terminally clever Jeff Watts arrangement and a nice solo by Marcus Roberts (or
was that on a live recording?).
The tune is definitely overplayed, but luckily, this seems to be recognized by
most recording artists, so it isn't really that overrepresented in own
collection.
Which leads me to two digressions, each worthy of their own
basenote/string/thread: so stay tuned.

No, I've noticed that too.
Speaking of a song that sounds like Autumn Leaves, I heard something
interesting on NPR awhile ago. They were interviewing some famous entertainer
(now pretty old-- I think he may have died) who was talking about Yiddish
folk music or some such thing.
They played a song that sounded almost exactly like Autumn Leaves (but the
folk song obviously predated Autumn Leaves). Is anyone out there familiar
with Yiddish folk music and how it may have influenced American composers of
the "Autumn Leaves" era whose roots are Yiddish?
I'm wondering if the composer may have actually based Autumn Leaves on a folk
song.
P.S. I'm not sure if it's correct to refer to someone having Yiddish roots--
I guess I mean German and Eastern European Jews who spoke Yiddish.
Only problem is that "Autumn Leaves" was not written by an american
composer.
It's a french song, written by poet Jacques Prevert and composer
Joseph Kosma (who was jewish).
