The ex-husband of McGuire's (Tom Cruise) love interest, appart from
being portrayed as a total loser, happens to be an avid jazz fan. (is
this supposed to be a causal relationship?) He makes references to
Coltrane and Miles during his conversations, and he gives a tape for
McGuire to play while making love to his new girlfriend (I forgot her
name in the movie). The tape contained some Miles, Trane, and Mingus.
While enjoying themselves and listening to the tape (a Charlie Mingus
tune) the two turn to each other and say "what the HELL is this music?!"
With Miles, Trane, and Mingus being my three favorite musicians, I was
somewhat insulted to see the jazz fan portrayed as a complete social
incompetent. Did any other viewers feel this way?
I wonder what this says about mainstream opinions concerning jazz and
jazz listeners at this point in time.
Anyway, I thought I'd throw this topic out for discussion.
(BTW, its an otherwise fine movie)

Come on! It was a great movie. I loved it!! The Mingus flipped me
out. At least Mingus and Miles were mentioned it such a movie. So
threy got the date wrong on the Miles in Stockholm 1960 (they said
1963). They played Haitian Fight Song during a LOVE SCENE! Of course
the Jerry MaGuire character didn't get it. He didn't get anything.
Well the jazz fan was a bit of a nut but small price to pay. And hey!
I'm as much of a Mingus fan as there ever was and I'll challenge anyone
on THAT point.
All the best,
Henry Robinett
I seem to have missed the original post and am clueless on this movie.
What is the movie, when did it come out, and what's it about, etc?
Somehow, it sounds interesting.....
