Again, we would really appreciate any comments, corrections and extra infor-
mation which could improve the quality of this discography. Specifically, if
people could send us information and/or corrections on:
* missing records and tapes,
* incorrect references (on dates, musicians, etc),
* additional references (for vinyl, CD, or different pressings);
for example, we are still looking for information on the following record:
* SONB: Tiziana Ghiglioni (???? - Splash, 370 (CD))

Katsuhiro Imai
for sending us extra material and giving prompt answers to our questions.
We are also endebted to:
Gustave Cerutti, who published the first comprehensive discography of Steve
Lacy in 1982, as a side project of his late magazine - Jazz 360 degrees -
and allowed us to use his work to start this new and updated discography;
Steve Lacy, who helped us to clarify some obscure references and showed a
strong interest in this project.

As a Steve Lacy neophyte I find this discog to be a bit overwhelming. Could
someone perhaps describe the different periods of Lacy's career and maybe list
a few vital albums from each period?
Rolling Stone's Jazz Record Guide mainly discusses his Monk related works from
the late 50's/early 60's and a little bit about his late 60's/70's
experimental stuff (e.g. the Tao song cycle stuff). It's not a particularly
detailed coverage of this obviously important figure.

Sorry, the "consummer report" version of it is not available yet :-).

All the record I list are available (which does not mean that they are all
waiting for you at your local store :-).
If you are interested in early Lacy, I recommend:
012 - THE STRAIGHT HORN OF STEVE LACY: Steve Lacy
013 - EVIDENCE: Steve Lacy
THE STRAIGHT HORN OF STEVE LACY is a very interesting record because of the
choice of the intruments (soprano and baryton) and the bold tune selection
(Cecil Taylor, Monk, Davis). This is a record I play very often and it still
has the magic of the first listening. Concerning EVIDENCE, I cannot say too
much about it because I don't have this record with me anymore and the last
time I played it was ... 8 years ago. I just remember that it is excellent
and it was done when Lacy was "messing" with Coleman's crew.
In the beginning 60's, Lacy had a regular quartet with Roswell Rudd, which
was only playing Monk's music. Getting a gig was impossible and they ended
up to play more than often in coffee places. There is a unique recording of
this period which has just been reissued recently.
052 - SCHOOL DAYS: Steve Lacy
Lacy has the same surgical precision to play Monk's tune and Roswell plays
in a more exhuberant way. A very curious contrast and a charming record.
Late 60's he moved to Europe. He spent few years in Italy and in 1969 he
decided to settle down in Paris, where he still lives. The 70's will be a
very important decade for him. He will play with everybody from the Euro-
pean scene (Globe Unity, Derek Bailey, Andrea Centazzo, Gaslini, etc). This
period is characterized by a lot of experimentation and is surely the hardest
to get in. Only few records are available and many are solo (more due to
financial reasons that anything else). Top of my head, you should try:
078/079 - AXIEME
it used to be available as two LP and is packaged now in one CD. It is a solo
recording and includes his famous suite (Tao). Highly recommended (any Lacy
fan has to have at least one Lacy Solo).
He emerges from the 70's with a well lubricated machine: his sextet. Also,
thanks to Irene, he begins to put more and more emphasis on singing. As much
as his music was introverted, abstract, as much the music of the sextet (with
few exceptions) is upbeat and kind of accessible.
For some early records documenting the sextet, I highly recommend:
102 - TROUBLES: Steve Lacy
104 - THE WAY: Steve Lacy
110 - SONGS: Steve Lacy, Brion Gysin
THE WAY is maybe my favorite of Lacy's sextet and is also the less accessible
of the three (you know where Lacy is coming from (the 70's)). TROUBLES and
specially SONGS are very upbeat records and it is surprising that they come
after the very experimental 70's. I remember my surprise when I bought these
records: Lacy could swing!
Now I leave to others recommendations for the 80's (Lacy has many fans on this
group, and they know his music much better than I do).
Patrice.
