I just picked up "More Than Mambo" and I was wondering if there is
any duplication with the "Best of Latin Jazz" single CD. Can
anyone compare the two??

I don't know the best of album you're talking about, but one of my
favorites is the Mambo Kings album. also on Verve. It's got more rare stuff
than More than Mambo and less Cal Tjader. I like the More than Mambo album but
why isn't their a wider range of musicians on the album. where's dizzy?

I'm not altogether sure why there's is such a narrow range of musicians on
More than Mambo, but judging from the three comps. discussed here, I'd
guess that Verve just doesn't have all that much in terms of variety in
Latin music.

As to the lack of Dizzy on More than Mambo, there's plenty of him and
other jazz guys on Mambo Kings. More than Mambo is conceived as a
companion to Mambo Kings, I suppose, so it doesn't try to cover the same
ground. The emphasis seems to be much more on the Afro-Cuban in
Afro-Cuban Jazz, and on more popular stuff. The Cal Tjader stuff on
MtM actually isn't bad. While it might seem like fun to deprecate
the white guy trying to play Latin, he actually did some very good
stuff, some of which is on MtM. He wasn't a great soloist, but he
did have a good sense of rhythm and texture.

If you want Dizzy, I suggest you buy the Verve box set.

Or more importantly, The Compelete RCA Victor recordings, a 2 CD set on
Bluebird/RCA that has the original Cubana Be, Cubana Bop and the seminal
Manteca that blew the lid off of everything. Verve was a great label at
times but owner Norman Granz had very specific tastes that shut out a lot
of good music.
