If you are talking about vinyl, Orpheus is good, but muy expensive. For
CD's Tower, Olsson's and even Border's to a lesser extent. I have yet to
find a good cheap used record store, with a decent selection. I guess
I'll hire King Arthur to find it for me, he's good with that Holy Grail
shit. john

I like Borders on 18th & L, nice selection, kind of $$ but usually have
what I want and then some. If it's something relatively popular you can
save $$ at Kemp Mill or another discout chain. Also, Olsons, Metro
center or Dupont Circle have nice collections about the same $ as
Borders.

Tower @ 21st and Penna. has a huge collection, but I find the staff
there to be a big turn off--not friendly, helpful or nice, but that's my
$.02. Actually, none of these places is too friendly but for some reason
Tower always seemed especially bad to me.

There are a couple of used places, i'm sure someone else will post the
specifics there.

Kemp Mill also has a good budget tapes section.

With all due respect Carlo these are not "record shops", they are CD
stores. In case Glenn really wants to buy vinyl, he should check out
Phantasmagoria (two locations -- Dupont Circle and Wheaton), Vinyl Ink in
Silver Spring, and Orpheus in Georgetown. Is Joe's record Paradise still
open? You won't find any steals at these places, they all know what they
have with some stores (which shall remain nameless because of the
previous shit I received on this topic) more expensive than others.

If Glenn does want CDs, throw Phantasmagoria and Flying Saucer in Adams
Morgan in the mix for good used and new selections. The other
stores Carlo mentioned are fine for new CDs, but don't have any used
stuff, except for Kemp Mill...well they do but don't if you know
what I mean. Happy hunting.

OUCH! Okay, I got rid of my vinyl years ago and forget that somepeople
still collect it. I think people mix the two terms anyway, you hear a
lot of musicians, esp. older ones saying "and I've got a new record
out..." when in fact its either cd or tape.

But you're right, mea culpa.

As for Kemp Mill and used CDs, the only used stuff they had bordered on
pop, ya know Kenny G etc.

I think the term "record shop" or "record store" is used generically to
mean places that sell recorded music, not necessarily LPs. The phone
book still lists CD retailers under "record stores."

Baltimore / Washington D.C. / Northern Virginia
Unofficial guide to Record / CD shops
Version 2.2
April 6, 1996
-----------------------------------------------

This is an unofficial guide to CD / Record shopping in the Baltimore /
Washington D.C. / Northern Virginia area. By no means is it complete,
and I make no guarantees to its correctness. Some of these places may
have closed, or have made drastic changes. Comments and additions to the list
(especially for stores in Northern Virginia and Washington D.C.)
are welcome. Email me at: g...@ari.net. Opinions are solely that of
the author and others. Realize that my music tastes (which generally are
non-mainstream, mostly heavy music) may be different from yours. I also
prefer to buy used CDs. Only a few chain stores are mentioned. The others
can go get bent if they think I'm paying $18 for a CD.

Some people made comments about stores I had listed, and some made comments
about stores I did not have listed. Comments other than my own are marked
with >>'s.

--------------------------------

What's new with this version?

A few stores were deleted/updated. Several stores in Northern Virginia
were added.

--------------------------------

Baltimore area (city)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vinyl Discoveries
5617 Belair Road
Baltimore, MD 21206
(410) 325-1020

New and used CDs, some cassettes, good selection of used vinyl.
Not a big selection of CDs. I've had a lot of success special ordering
hard to find stuff with them. Prices are $8 - $9 for used, and $13 to $15
for new CDs.

-----------------------

Reptilian Records
403 S. Broadway (Fells Point)
Baltimore, MD 21231
(410) 327-6853

Very small selection of new and used CDs, cassettes, and vinyl. Some stuff
by local bands. Prices are OK. Almost all heavy metal / hardcore.
Used to have a big selection of comic books.

-----------------------

Sound Garden
1616 Thames Street (Fells Point)
Baltimore, MD 21231
(410) 563-9011

New and used CDs. Some vinyl. Very good selection of used CDs. They pay
good prices ($4.50 - $5.00) for used CDs. They will buy CD club CDs.
They're not as picky as some of the other places. Prices are $8 - $9 for
used, and $11 - $14 for new CDs. A little of everything. They have a
self-service listening area. Some imports.

-----------------------

Musical Exchange
422 N. Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
(410) 528-9815 fax: (410) 625-7528

Lots of used CDs. Maybe some new. Decent selection of used vinyl. Good
prices on CDs. A little disorganized. Lots of CDs marked below $5. Pick
up a copy of Baltimore's City Paper. There's a coupon for 25% off of
anything in the store.

-----------------------

Record Collections, Inc.
523 N. Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
(410) 528-1616 fax: (410) 837-9429

Lots of used vinyl. Very big selection of classical vinyl. Good place
for vinyl fans. Some used CDs.

-----------------------

Dimensions In Music
221 N. Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
(410) 752-7121 fax: (410) 752-1722

New CDs only? Don't remember much, except that they had this special Jazz
room. Couldn't find any of the Jazz I was looking for though.

-----------------------

Modern Music
2905 O' Donnell Street
Baltimore, MD 21224
(410) 675-2172

New and used CDs/vinyl/videos/clothing/mix tapes/magazines. Extremely neat.
Neatest music shop I've ever been in. They advertise specializing in:
ambient/acid jazz/trip hop/trance/jungle/house/industrial/experimental/
gothic/modern rock. Prices OK. Not a big selection. They recently moved to
this location.

-----------------------

Baltimore area (suburbs)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

An Die Musik, Inc.
1 Investment Place
Towson, MD 21204
(410) 296-8742 fax: (410) 296-8883

They have moved somewhere downtown. Not sure where yet.

They sell new CDs only, prices range from $13 to $15. They have a special
room for classical CDs (huge selection). They make it easy to listen to CDs.
Very neat and organized.

-----------------------

Music Machine
11459 Cronhill Drive, Suite O
Owings Mills, MD 21117
(410) 356-4567 fax: (410) 356-4693

New and used CDs, cassettes and vinyl. Lots of rarities and collectables
(best selection I've seen). Some imports. Big mail order place. Prices
are kind of high. One thing I notice about this place is that they
have a lot of import versions of CDs, that are exactly the same as the
domestic versions. These import versions are priced high, $20+. I have had
problems special ordering stuff from them. Call before going there. They
are mostly a mail order place now.

-----------------------

Of Sound Mind (Chris Lamka)
4134 E. Joppa Road, Suite 104
Baltimore, MD 21236
(410) 529-7082 fax: (410) 529-5761

New and used CDs. Used vinyl. Rare and import progressive rock music,
mostly. All the rare stuff Planet Music would not have, but little to none
of the stuff Planet Music would have. Import prices are fair. Not a big
selection. More quality than quantity.

-----------------------

Records Unlimited, Inc.
7968 Belair Road 1354 Martin Boulevard
Baltimore, MD 21236 Baltimore, MD 21220
(410) 882-2262 (410) 391-1924

New, used, CDs, cassettes, and vinyl. A *huge* selection of 45s. Prices are
very high for CDs. I've only been to the Belair Road store.

-----------------------

Record & Tape Traders
Many stores around Baltimore

New and used CDs and cassettes. Shirts and posters. Prices are $8 - $10
for used, and $12 - $15 for new CDs. Notoriously pay low prices for
anything you want to sell. Take it somewhere else. I've been to a few
stores, and the Catonsville store has the best selection. Mostly mainstream.
A few imports. All stores are ProTix outlets.

-----------------------

Record Theatre
7405 Liberty Road
Balimore, MD
(410) 944-4525

Closed.

-----------------------

Steady Beat Records
2620-C Annapolis Road
Severn, MD 21144

12" dance records / party mix tapes / house / rap / reggae. Not a big
selection. Don't recall prices.

-----------------------

Best Buy
few stores around Baltimore / Washington D.C. / Virginia

New CDs and cassettes. Major chain store, but they have a huge selection,
and all single CDs are $12.99 or less. Many are less. Some imports.

-----------------------

Planet Music
5894 Baltimore National Pike (next to Westview Mall)
Baltimore, MD 21228
(410) 455-5301

New CDs, and cassettes. Decent selection of used CDs. Big import section.
They have the largest selection of CDs I've ever seen. It's *huge*. It would
be the greatest place around except that they require a membership to get
the best prices, which doesn't sit too well with me. But, I finally broke
down, and bought a membership. I'd had to do it. Their selection is so good.
Their classical music section (in a separate room) is bigger than most other
stores. They make it *very* easy to listen to CDs before purchasing them.

Membership is $12 a year. Prices range from $12 - $18 for new CDs for
non-members. Members get 20% off of that.

Note: The membership plan mentioned above is the one I have. It has since
changed, and according to an employee at the store, they will keep
trying new plans. I think with the current membership, there is no
membership / non-membership price. Only the high price exists.
Membership (for the same $12) gets you a free sampler disc of
your choice and a $10 refund for every $100 you spend, which doesn't
seem like a very good deal to me. You have to spend $100 just to get
back most of your membership fee. Spend $200, and you save $8. Yippee.

Also, they no longer buy used CDs.

-----------------------

Washington D.C. area (Maryland suburbs)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kemp Mill Music
Some stores around Washington D.C. and Baltimore

New CDs and cassettes. Some stores have a decent selection of used CDs, but
every CD has this clover like whole punched through the cover. If you ask
me, that destroys the CD. I don't buy them.

A chain store, but their prices are pretty good. $11 for some new CD
releases. $12 - $14 for everything else. Mostly mainstream. I've been to a
few stores in Maryland, and the Columbia store is the only one I've seen
with the good cut-out selection they advertise. At the time I wrote this,
the Columbia store had a *huge* selection of $1.99, $3.99, etc. cut-out CDs,
and cassettes as low as 50 cents. All (?) stores are TicketMaster outlets.

-----------------------

CDepot
9219 Baltimore Boulevard
College Park, MD 20740
(301) 982-3472 fax: (301) 982-3473

New and used CDs. Mostly used. Good selection of imports. Big Selection.
Pay good prices ($4.50 - $5.00) for CDs and don't care if they are
CD club CDs. If I could only go to one CD store for used CDs, this would
be the one. They have a self-service listening area. Prices are $8 - $9
for used, $10 - $13 for new CDs. I have had past success special ordering
stuff from them. They always have stacks of CDs piled all over the place.

-----------------------

The Record & Tape Exchange
8147-D Baltimore Boulevard 901 Bay Ridge Road Pickett Shop. Ctr. (rt. 236)
College Park, MD Annapolis, MD Fairfax, VA
(301) 345-9338 (410) 267-0462 (703) 425-4256
(301) 261-1079

Used CDs, Cassettes, and vinyl. OK selection for each. Very good prices for
used CDs. Pay good prices for CDs ($4.50 - $5.00) and don't care if they are
CD club CDs. Prices are $7.50 - $8 for used CDs. They might buy used
cassettes. I'm not sure if they still do. I've only been to the College
Park store. If you are going to both this place and CDepot, go here first,
as both places always seem to have the same CD you want and CDepot has it
for 50 cents more. :-)

-----------------------

Vinyl Ink Records
955 Bonifant Street
Silver Spring, MD 20910
(301) 588-4695

Mostly new CDs, but some used. Rarities, collectables. Lots of 7" vinyl,
and some 12" vinyl. A very unique place. Prices for new CDs are kind of
high, usually $15. Good selection of imports. Indie - Pop / New Wave /
Hardcore / Noise. Don't go here looking for mainstream stuff. Get on their
mailing list. They have good sales.

Washington D.C.

Used CDs only (and reconditioned stereo equipment). Fair prices. I've only
been to the Laurel and Falls Church stores. The Falls Church store has a much
better selection.

-----------------------

Phantasmagoria
11308 Grandview Avenue ? (Dupont Circle)
Wheaton, MD 20902 Washington D.C.
(301) 949-8886

New and used CDs, cassettes, and vinyl. Large selection of each. Will buy
CDs and cassettes, but won't buy CD club CDs. They finally put artist
dividers for their CD selection! Good prices for used CDs, $8 - $9, but
not so good for new CDs, $15. Good mix of many types of music. Also have
large selection of posters. Big store. They even have a rest room!
I've only been to the Wheaton store.

-----------------------

Joe's Record Paradise
13822 Georgia Avenue (Northgate plaza)
Silver Spring, MD 20906
(301) 460-8394

New and used CDs, cassettes, and vinyl. OK selection of each. Videos
and memorabilia. Not as organized as some other stores. Some imports.
More jazz than anything else. Wide range of prices on everything. A little
bit of everything, but not enough of anything (except jazz). New CD section
is overcrowded and is difficult to search through.

-----------------------

Yesterday & Today Records
1327 Rockville Pike, Suite J/K
Rockville, MD 20852
(301) 279-7007 fax: (301) 279-8644

Vinyl, vinyl, and more vinyl. 45s too. Did I mention vinyl? Small selection

vinyl fans.

-----------------------

Rockville CD Exchange
Talbott Center (2nd floor)

-----------------------

Moore Music

CD club CDs. They have a listening area. Prices are $8 - $9 for used,
