This obscure, graphically challenged, odd little reissue is a true find. Its
32 tracks contain most of Ahmad Jamal's finest recorded work. All of this
material was recorded live, in nightclubs, and some of it comes from albums
that were hugely popular in their day, like Jamal at The Pershing. Yet much
of it has been unavailable for years. The sound quality is good enough to
bring those long-gone nights alive. If there were any cold hearts in those
chattering crowds at the Alhambra and the Blackhawk, they were melted by the
irresistible charm of Jamal's tickling right hand on tunes like "Moonlight
in Vermont." But Jamal also commanded a repertoire of harmonic
substitutions, manipulations of space, exquisitely controlled tension and
release, signature vamps, riffs, and tag endings, from which he crafted
three-minute symphonies like "Billy Boy"-treatises on group form that
changed jazz.

As the light changed from red to green to yellow and back to red again, I
sat there thinking about life. Was it nothing more than a bunch of honking
and yelling? Sometimes it seemed that way.

if you like jamal i would also recommend -
ahmad jamal a la olympia
ahmad jamal trio - awakening
chicago revisited - live at joe segals jazz showcase
ahmad jamal - encore
ahmad jamal - ahmad's blues
ahmad jamal - i remember duke hoagy and strayhorn
and you have mentioned the cross country tour
i love the a la olympia. really open sounding recording and
beautifully recorded too.
Good choices all, Puck. I would add "Live in Paris" and the one with
Othello Molineaux on steel pan (can't remember the title, sorry, but it's
about 3 or so years old).
There's another CD on Chess available with even more material from the 1958
gig. I forget the title, but it has gems like "That's All" etc. on it.

Is that the one with George Coleman? Geez, why would any pianist with a
perfect trio conception have a saxophone on his recordings? And mind you,
I'm a saxophone player myself. But in the case of piano trios I'm strict. No
horns please!!

Now you made me get up and walk to my cabinet: Actually it's "Ahmad's
Blues", GRP 18032, (p) 1994
16 tracks recorded 1958 at the Spotlite Club, Washington, DC.
Great companion CD to the 2CD-set by Chess mentioned at the beginning of
this thread.
