This is the song played toward the end of the movie when the prisoners are
celebrating Christmas. One man is singing it while other men improvise on
washboard and washtub bass. The words go, "I love you, I love you".

Can anybody ID that song title so I can look it up? Thanks for the earlier
help on Cole Porter's "You Do Something To Me".

I found a discussion about the song on an Internet Movie Database message
board. This might be of some help:

"I Love You" is a Cole Porter composition. Bing Crosby had the hit pop record.
Two great jazz versions for starters-- Coltrane on Prestige in 1957, released
on "Lush Life" album, and an underrated, swinging rendition by Jimmy Forrest on
"Most Much" (Prestige 7218)

The song from Stalag 17 definitely is not Cole Porter's "I Love You".

This does help, Ira. Now I have the lyrics. If only I can get the title!
Maybe I'll ask some of the local old-times. This song also appears in that
film about which I was asking earlier, "The Sun Also Rises".

Is it Irving Berlin's "I Love You"?

Mea culpa. Like others, I posted quickly without thinking, :), just did a
quick scan of my brain to the title "I Love You". Now, I've re-listened to the
records, and thought back to the movie, and, of course, the song in the movie
is not Cole Porter's, nor recorded by Trane.

The song in the movie is indeed titled :I Love You", though, and was the
swinging vehicle recorded by Jimmy Forrest that I mentioned. Also in my
collection are Coleman Hawkins on Victor in 1947 (luscious), wild vocal by Slim
Gaillard on Dot, and corny but effective vocal by Dan Grissom with Jimmie
Lunceford in 1939 (Vocallion).

Also did some reserach in books (not computer). The song was written by Harry
Archer (now long forgotten but popular 1920's tunesmith) for the Broadway show
"Little Jessie James" in 1923.

Thanks! This is the missing piece of the puzzle.
