I would like to know where you heard this. Last year around this time I had
heard that the JJ box set was originally going to be released in the Fall of
2002.
And since we are on the subject of on-again, off-again Miles' box sets, does
anyone know whatever happened with the planned "Live-Evil" sets that were
going to be released last year? There were going to be three two-CD sets
that were going to encompass his stint at the Cellar Door in December 1970.
You never know what they're going to release next. They've already
deviated several times from the plan they originally announced back
when the Plugged Nickel set came out, and I don't think any of the
sets after that one has come out "on time". "Live at the Blackhawk"
was supposed to have been (re-)released a month or two ago (according
to Down Beat), but I haven't seen that yet.
Anyway, I think "...Jack Johnson" was a great album. Of all Miles's
fusion albums, it was the one that was most "rockish". Lots of killer
guitar from John McLaughlin, and I love the way Miles plays on it,
too. It was only a single disc, though. Even if they add "Go Ahead
John" (from "Big Fun") and the studio parts of "Live-Evil", I don't
see where they're going to get enough material for 5 discs. Is there
that much unreleased stuff from that period?

I'm a big John McLaughlin fan, but Sonny Sharrock was also on Jack
Johnson - uncredited. I don't know who's playing what, but that record
flat out rocks!
5 CDs? I don't know what they found, but if they have more material
that's as good as the single album that was released, it's going to
absolutely kill....

That's the problem with the last 2 sets, in my opinion. Both "Bitches Brew" and "In a silent way"
were better as albums. The boxes spread the material a bit thin. (I know that this is the opinion
of the Penguin guide, and in that regard, I completely agree with the authors).
"Jack Johnson" is a great album. I'll probably wait for the remastered cd, which will probably
follow a few months after the box.

Sharrock plays along with McLaughlin on the "Willie Nelson"
segment in the second half of "Yesternow" (between the two appearances
of Miles's muted solo). The rest of the guitar on Jack Johnson is
McLaughlin.

You forgot "Duran", not to mention Jack Johnson himself. Miles was
always a big boxing fan. Sugar Ray (Robinson, not Leonard) was his
hero in the 50s.

Well, you remember what Teo Macero said, "So whoever doesn`t like

Mike.
Absolutely excellent news!
Thanks for posting the entire track listing.

So who WAS the song named after, anyone know?

It was named after THE Willie Nelson. Although the track was recorded in
1970, it was not released until 1981 on the "Directions" LP, and it was
probably titled at that time. By this time, Willie was a superstar.

Maybe someone can find it.

As I understand it, the Blackhawk stuff will be out shortly, and the
Live Evil is the next one due after Jack Johnson.
----------------------------------------------------------
Any information on what will be on the Live Evil discs ? How many ? Will
it be complete concerts ?
Thanks, Mike.
Yeah, Miles and Willie Nelson go way back. In fact, Miles even
mentions Willie in his autobiography:
"Willie was all over 52nd Street back in those days. He'd be sitting
in with that funky old gut-string guitar and cutting every motherfucker
in town. No one would hire him because the motherfucker was crazier
than Monk, Bud, and Mingus all rolled up in one crazy white motherfucker.
One time he said to me "Miles, what were you thinking when you got dressed
this morning? That's the goofiest-looking outfit I've ever seen." He'd just
be raving like that, you dig, not even making sense. One day he was way out
to lunch, and starts in with his crazy shit again: "Miles, no one is really
all that interested in hearing about your sex life." That's how far out
there that motherfucker was. I wrote him a tune called "Crazy". Later I
heard he had whitified it up and sold it to some white bitch. She had a
big hit but I never saw none of that money. Typical white bullshit.
But that's my tune. I wrote that.
One day I was standing outside Birdland minding my own business when
this dumb-ass cracker cop tells me to move along. Well, I don't move
along for no white motherfucker, so I told that cop "you can kiss my
black ass you dumb white motherfucker".
When I regained consciousness, the first thing I saw as I opened my
eyes was Willie. Bending over me with that long-ass greasy hair all
backlit by the sun, I thought he was an angel. One ugly motherfucking
white angel. I thought God had made a mistake and sent me to the white
man's heaven. I started praying out loud, "Please God, I'd rather go to
black man's hell than be stuck all up in here with these ugly white bitch
angels. At least you know the hoes be fine down there."
Then I heard Willie's voice saying "You're going to be all right, Miles.
I called an ambulance and they're on their way. Here, let me wipe that
blood off of your brow...". I saw him start to unwrap that bandanna
off his greasy-ass white head and bring it down towards me. I tried to
struggle and break free, but I was too weak. When that bandanna touched
my face I screamed and passed out again.
Man, kicking heroin was nothing compared to getting over the obsessive/
compulsive face-washing habit I developed after that incident. I spent most
of the 70s holed up in my bathroom trying to wash off Willie's bandanna
funk.
Cicely would try and fuck with my head, saying "Miles, your neck seems to be
taking on a pinkish tinge there at the back." You can't say the bitch wasn't
asking for it.

Reference copies of the Live Evil set have existed for years, and
yes, they are complete sets. Check the discography section of
miles-beyond.com for info.
Interestingly (and this almost got past me), the "Miles Ahead"
site lists the timings for the unedited sets from the June 70 "Miles
Davis At Fillmore" shows (except Thursday, for some reason), so those
tapes must still exist, too.
