I have a live version of "My Favorite Things" that I taped off the
radio many years back. I seem to remember that it was from a
recording made at a music festival. I played it for someone in a
record store recently and he was able to tell me that Roy Haynes is
playing the drums, and suggested that I check out "Newport 63." While
this sounds similar to what I have on tape, it is not the same
performance. Does anyone know of other live recordings of "My
Favorite Things" featuring Roy Haynes? I suppose it could be a
bootleg, which would make things a lot more complicated.

I don't especially like most jazz (including free jazz), so you might
want to run me out of town after responding to my question. I like
_this_ though. . .

np: Sun Ra "Other Planes of There"

David Wild's online Coltrane discography covers the time period when
Haynes was subbing for Elvin Jones and he has an index by song title -

Out of 22 times MFT was recorded (including issued bootlegs), the only
one with Haynes is the 1963 Newport one. I used to have it on a
bootleg LP with a song from a totally different show on the other
side.

If you can make a copy, there are people out there who could probably
help.

How similar and how different are the two recordings of MFT?

Uh oh, I'm starting to think it is the same. I need more time to
listen to the two recordings. Keep in mind that what I have on tape
is a mono recording with virtually no bass, so the overall sound is
different. I'll tell you, it's a challenge trying to remember long
stretches of Coltrane's soloing, for the sake of comparison. I'm a
non-musician without the synapses for that sort of thing.

I think that it is included in the John Coltrane Rhino boxed set.
Haynes also plays on some of cuts on the Live at the Village Vangard 4 CD set.

Not the live version he's talking about. That's on Impulse. You're thinking
of the studio version of MFT.
