That's odd. I thought Ironic (Annette Peacock's label) was based in the
UK.
The only article I've found on Peacock was in Wire from maybe 2 years ago.
Typical Wire article, a bit superficial, a few neat facts, nice photograph.
The earliest of Annette Peacock's public musical activities I'm aware of
are her compositions for Paul Bley. (I would guess they met through
Gary Peacock.) The only records I have where she actually performs
with Bley are _I'm the One_ and an odd but nice live lp called
_Touching_ (I think, '69?), with Bley, Peacock and Dutch drummer Han Bennink.
Other than that, I have _I Have No Feelings_, _Skyskating_ and (I think)
_Been in the Streets Too Long_, all on Ironic. These are all wonderful.
_I Have No Feelings_ is the most austere of the lot. The other two have
more of a jazzy (and in some tunes, pop-ish) feel, with her usual
idiosyncratic view of things. Irresistable.
I've also heard bits of Abstract-Contact, and some other records, which
are more straightahead and rock-oriented. I don't really care for these
records. All the Ironic releases that I own are essential.
There are, of course, piles of Annette Peacock compositions on Paul
Bley records from the late '60s and early '70s.
Bill
..she does some arranging, composing, conducting on it.

She was married to Michael Mantler and togetehr I think they ran/run
WATT records and had something to do with JCOA ( a defunct distribution
house related to the Jazz Composers Orchestra?). Carla left Michael and
is now eith Steve Swallow. She has a daughter named Karen MAntler who has
recorded too. I think she was married to Paul Bley before Mantler. I'm
very fond of a Live lp by Carla from the early 80's. She's known for odd
big band arrangments, one piece of hers is a medley of national anthems.
Though I have other releases I couldn't really describe them well.

I have an Annette Peacock CD on Ironic (UK) that I picked up a few years
ago. I cannot remember the title, but it is really good. The source for
Annette Peacock stuff in the US is no longer around (Lunch For Your Ears)
so I do not know where to get it anymore, at least here.

The CD is great and if someone wants, I will post the contents (it has
stuff from several records.)

Annette Peacock is a composer who was married to bassist Gary Peacock while he
was working with pianist Paul Bley, who at the time was married to composer
Carla Bley. At some point the Peacocks split but Annette stuck with Paul who
split with Carla. Hmmm?
Anyway, "I'm The One", recorded for RCA courtesy of David Bowie's Mainman
company, was actually a collaboration with Paul Bley (although the U.S. version
at least has no credits). This featured lots of synthesizers and Peacock's
monotonic vocals. The next release in the U.S. was "X-Dreams" on Tomato,
recorded in the UK with prog-rock folks like Bill Bruford, Ollie Halsall, etc.
Peacock guested on Bruford's album "Feels Good to Me" around the same time
(1979? 1980?). There was a followup to "X-Dreams" which I heard, but was not a
U.S. release. Since then I know nothing.
Paul Bley himself has recorded many compositions of both Peacock and his
ex-wife Carla. The title track of "I'm The One" was covered by fellow
RCA/Mainman artist Mick Ronson on his first album "Slaughter on 10th Avenue"
which is NOT a jazz album whatsoever.

I saw Carla Bley performing in NYC years ago (~ 1976 ?) with Terry Adams
from NRBQ playing piano. Anyway, I asked Carla about her compositions
recorded by Paul, and she told me that Paul encouraged her to compose when
they were married. Then he started recording her tunes, but never paid
her any royalties! She felt that getting free songs was the main reason
he encouraged her to write!

Do you think my mailer went crazy enough posting four copies of this here?
My apologies - it was giving me a failure message every time I tried to
post.
