IS>Does anybody have any advance information about dates for the New
IS>Orleans Jazz Festival? Myself and couple of friends had discussed
IS>going to the NOJF instead of Mardi Gras this year. Has anybody been to
IS>both and can comment on whether we should do the Jazz Fest and/or the
IS>Mardi Gras? Thanks in advance,

I have the dates of N.O. Jazz Fest below in a press release. More
releases will be forthcoming in the near future.
Compare apples and oranges? Hmmm...they're both good! It depends on
your taste. New Orleans is already showing signs of Mardi Gras fever.
Its the largest party in North America!
Jazz Fest is a MAJOR musical event!
I recommend doing both...or flipping a coin.

NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES DATES FOR 26TH ANNUAL
CELEBRATION AS APRIL 28 THROUGH MAY 7
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has announced the
dates of its 26th annual festival. Quint Davis, producer of the
festival, announced that the celebration will start Friday, April 28,
1995 and run through Sunday, May 7,1995.
The 10-day event is one of the most important music festivals
in the world. Since its inception in 1970, millions of people from
all over the continent and the world have journeyed to the festival to
participate in the near-perfect union of the unique music and culture
of the region, with many making it an annual ritual not to be missed.
The 10-day festival brings some of the best musicians, both
well-known and unknown, to the musical foref
ront with thousands of
artists from the worlds of jazz, rhythm and blues, Gospel, Afro-
Caribbean, Cajun, Latin, zydeco, rock, country and western and other
musical genres vying for achance to play for such an enthusiastic
audience. A veritable who's who, present and past, of Louisiana
luminaries including Fats Domino, Wynton Marsalis, Professor Longhair,
the Neville Brothers, Pete Fountain, Clifton Chenier, Al Hirt, Harry
Connick Jr., Danny Barker, Jerry Lee Lewis and Irma Thomas have
performed on the 11 stages of the festival's Louisiana Heritage Fair
held weekend on the park-like infield of the Fair Grounds Race Track
and on the special evening concerts held almost every night in various
venues around the city. Special guests including Aretha Franklin,
Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett, Patti LaBelle, Tito Puente, Muddy
Waters, the Allman Brothers, Bob Dylan, Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Staple
Singers, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Van Morrison, B.B. King and Dizzy
Gillespie have also graced the stages of the festival.
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival isn't made up only of
music though. It's Heritage Fair to be held Friday, April 28 through
Sunday, April 30 and Thursday, May 4 through Sunday, May 7 also
features the best of Louisiana's specialty foods from shrimp poboys to
crawfish monica to alligator sauce piquante. The Heritage Fair also
brings together hundreds of artisans who demonstrate the production of
their contemporary and folk crafts and sell their wares. And in Congo
Square, an area of cultural exchange, traditional African and special
African-American crafts and performances can be found, exemplifying
the strong African-American heritage of the region.
A full-color brochure with a complete schedule of events,
like-up and ticket mail order form will be available in March 1995.

==RIP====================================================================RIP==
I went to the Jazz Festival two years ago and really enjoyed it. Dates
this year, (I called to request a brochure) are April 28-30 and May 4-7.
I've not been to Mardi Gras, but people say its much more crowded. The
Jazz Fest has about 10 stages with constant entertainment, a wide variety
of music. It's only about $11 to get in for the whole event (per day).
In addition there are evening concerts in large venues (extra $) and jams
in local clubs. It rained almost constantly in 93, so be prepared. It
was a warm, tropical kind of rain tho.
Have fun
