I thought this would be the best place to ask this - a friend of mine tells me
that Marcus Miller and Wynton Kelly are related (He thinks that Wynton Kelly
was Marcus Miller's uncle). Is this true? He also mentioned that Marcus
Miller and Randy Weston may also be related.
Can anyone out there confirm if this is true or false?
Thanks,
John

According to an interview that he gave years ago, Marcus Miller first
introduced himself to Miles by saying that he was Wynton Kelly's
cousin. Miles later asked if he had ever heard his cousin play and
Marcus said no, to which MIles replied, "Your cousin was a genius".
Hi Chuck:
No -I realize the topic is a little on the goofball side - it's just that a
friend wanted me to find out about it. I thought for sure that someone here
would know, and I could end my friend's search...goofy as it is.
Thanks,
John

Interesting...to me, this looks like yet another example of the "irony
gap", a fundamental problem with this medium, imo. I've always read CN's
snappy retorts as jokes, meant to be taken with a (more or less sardonic)
smile, not as attempts to "shut down" discussion.
Part of what characterizes his posts is the deadpan "tone" in
which they are written -- he may have used an emoticon once, but I think
that's it. And, to be honest, I can understand his avoidance of such
things. Emoticons may keep people from misreading irony, but they also
unfailingly kill whatever humor a post might contain.
Unfortunately, on the 'net, this kind of ironic ambiguity doesn't always
play very well, because misreadings are so endemic. Of course matters
aren't helped by irrational, totally obnoxious trolls like Mr.Jazz53
(Amos), who seem not to be interested in humor, but only in saying
whatever it takes to piss other people off. When people read irony in
this context, then, they seem to get mad and think "troll", instead of
thinking "hmmm...is this really a malicious statement, or is it supposed
to be taken in jest?"
That's a shame, I think. I personally like a bit of irony, and keep
entertaining the hope that one day, prolonged usenet use will turn people
into savvy enough readers and writers that they'll be able to appreciate
people who say what they mean indirectly.
