Recently, I ran across a book (sorry, I do not have the title with
me) of jazz flute transcriptions by major jazz flute players. Besides
the players listed in the thread (i.e., Newton, Dolphy, Laws, Farrell),
there were also transcriptions for Buddy Collette, Paul Horn, Herbie
Mann, James Moody, Sam Most, Jeremy Steig, and Dave Valentin. I have
also been listening to Philip Bent, Nestor Torres, Humphries (1st name
I forgot -- a woman), and Jamie Baum. I am particularly interested in
the flute in Latin music. Any other suggestions for fine jazz flute
players?

In March, I attended a jazz concert at the Glenn Gould Theatre in Toronto
featuring Jane Bunnett. She plays soprano sax and flute, and brought with
her musicians from Brazil and Cuba. The cubans, Filo and Celso Machado
were simply outstanding. Celso played a variety of traditional Brazilian
instruments including the nose flute. At the time of the concert, Filo
was working on a new album. His last release was called Oxala Pere, and
is on Kardum/IMO. In 1990, Jane put out a CD called Spirits of Havana,
but I'm not familiar with it. I like some of her earlier works, especially
New York Duets, with Don Pullen.
Cheers,

Tom

(Sorry if I'm getting in on this thread late, but, in case no one has
mentioned it yet...) Albert Soccoras (sp?) played some nice jazz flute
on various recordings by the Clarence Williams band in the 1920s and
early 30s.
