I won't try to decide best, but these are some of my favorites.

Male: John Hendricks, Eddie Jefferson, Kevin Mahogany, Mark Murphy, Bobby
McFerrin, Dave Frishberg

Groups: Lambert, Hendricks and Ross; Les Double Six; Manhattan Transfer:
New York Voices; The Real Group; Vox Office; 2 +2

3) Mel Torme
4) Mark Murphy
5) Frank Sinatra (yes!)

Groups.

The Godfather of Vocalese - Eddie Jefferson. After him Jon Hendricks.
Best Group? That's easy... Manhattan Transfer (who, by the way learned from
the Godfather himself...)

How is it possible for anyone to assemble a list of "best" jazz vocalists
that contains more than two names and not include Louis Armstrong?

I prefer to say "favorite" rather than "best."

1. Nat Cole
2. Frank Sinatra
3. Billy Ecstine
4. Mel Torme
5. Chet Baker

I agree that 'best' is not a good word. 'Favorite' is better.
Some of my favs:

Joe Williams without a doubt
Eddie Jefferson
Tony Bennet--check out his album with Bill Evans
Jon Hendricks

I believe that people totally forgot about TAKE 6. They are a group of 6
male vocalists, that win the Downbeat poll every year, and sound
fantastic.
As for male vocalists, I think BOBBY McFERRIN has been highly underrated
on this list, as well as Jon Hendricks.

It's not possible for anyone to make a list of great male vocalists and
not include Satch. As for other great trympeter/vocalists, how about Red
Allen and Hot Lips Page
