Several times on NPR I heard what I considered some very appealing
sax playing by a man named, I am quite sure, Bernard Johnson.
It was heavily based in Gospel and Christian Hymnody, if I recall,
but was unambiguously mainstream Jazz.

No one at HMV ever heard of him.

Pointers? Did I screw his name up? What label is he on or under
what is he collected? Anybody else like him?

I think I can help you Bernard. The artist you are thinking of is gospel
saxophonist VENARD Johnson and his latest album was released about three
years ago (I believe on Elektra Nonesuch) as part of an American Masters
series that also included Charlie Feathers, Johnnie Johnson and several
others.

Ah, thank you... It is clear what the source of my confusion is now:)
Thanks for clearing that up.
