I just read a press release that Ana Maria, Wayne Shorter's
wife was one of the casualties on the ill-fated TWA Flight
800.

An interesting coincidence is that Herbie Hancock's sister and manager
at the time died on the famous Dallas "wind shear" crash of about 10
years ago...

No way. Someone who knows how to get in touch with Wayne -- even if it's
the his agent/fan club address on the new Verve CD -- please post an
address. Many RMBers will want to send notes of condolence, including
myself.

So, you think this is an interesting coincidence? I think you're sick!
There is no coincidence; there's only this tragic and useless loss of
so many lives, and we should sincerely mourn over them.

I do hope Wayne Shorter can find faith and strength to cope with
this tragic loss.

Don't be silly.

Yesterday (July 19), I heard Jose Duarte ("Mister Jazz"), on a (Portuguese) TV
channel, saying some words about Ana Maria. (It was only a small a 2 minutes
piece.)

She was from the area of the Portuguese town Cartaxo and, for some reason, she
moved to NY when she was 15 (if I understood well). Later, she became a Jazz
lover and started to hang around some Jazz clubs. That's how she met Wayne.
According to Jose it was love at the first sight. She was studding Sociology at
that time.

The couple and Jose gathered a number of times in Portugal, and Jose recalled
one or two casual episodes. For example, how did Wayne learned to enjoy the
very peculiar wine of Cartaxo and how a small glass was enough to make it a bit
dizzy (still is).

Again, according to Jose, the Shorter's was a really great couple, although
recently, their relationship was getting a bit cold. She was 43.

(Jose Duarte is a jazz critic and a very well known personality from the
Portuguese radio. He also collaborates every year in the critics pool of
DownBeat.)

My wife played with Larry Coryell last week who is pretty close to
Shorter and had called him to see how he was doing. Coryell said that
Shorter was remarkably strong about the situation and is confident
that she has reached the Buddhist heaven.

Not sure but I think he said that Shorter's niece or somebody was
traveling with Ana Maria.

Whatever the case, it's tragic not only for Shorter but for family and
friends of all those on the flight.
