I have a dumb question. How is the guitarists name pronounced?
Is it "McLocklin" like the dude on PBS, or "McLofflin"? I've
heard it both ways.

I've always pronounced it "McLofflin"; but I've heard it as
"McLocklin"....
I guess I wouldn't believe anyone (including me) that responds here, the
only one who knows is him (John Mc.).

I've always pronounced the "gh" the same as "ch" is pronounced in "loch".
The other two pronunciations you mention are approximations made by people
who're neither Scots nor German :-)

But then, I don't think JM is Scottish... so I wonder what *he* prefers?

A friend of mine who was the sound guy for Mahavishnu Orchestra years ago
and still sees him occasionally says it is "McLocklin."

John McLaughlin himself pronounce his name "McLofflin". --Peter

On his CD, don't know the name now, where he plays live in Japan,
with his trio, you can hear him say at the end of the last track:
".... and for myself, John McLaughlin ....",
where it sounds like McLovlin or McLofflin.

FWIW I gather McLaughlin is a Yorkshireman (Halifax or Huddersfield I think),
and the norm there (I'm from Leeds) would be to pronounce it as Brian
suggested, as in the Scottish "loch". (Thats how I've always pronounced
his name)

Hardly a definitive answer but I thought someone might be interested.
No well perhaps not....

If you are talkin' about the Free Spirits' "Live in Tokyo", I have
just listened to it again after reading your post, and to me it
sounds like he is saying "McLochlin", with "ch" like in
german "Dach" or scottish "loch".

It is pronounced "McLocklin" but it used to be "Ma-ha-vish-nu."
