Okay, I'll take a shot at this....I'm no Berne expert so Vince, Hsu,
or Lea can correct and annotate.
Berne grew up in NY and started playing late in life (22?). He
underwent a several year apprenticeship under Julius Hemphill,
learning the music and the business. In the late 70s he formed his own
record company (I don't know what it was called) and released several
albums, mostly trios I think (I haven't heard them).
In the early-mid 80s Berne was signed to Columbia (one of musician/A&R
man Gary Lucas' all time great practical jokes) and he released 2
albums for them 'Fultim Street Maul' and 'Sanctified Dreams' (both
killer).
Since then he has recorded on JMT and released several albums
including 'Fractured Fairy Tales', 'Caos Totale' and I'm sure I'm
forgetting a couple. He also put out 2 (?) albums with a trio called
'Miniature' with Hank Roberts on cello, and Joey Baron on drums.
There was also an album in the early 80s on either Black Saint or Soul
Note whose title I can't recall (I just ran across it a couple of
months ago and bought it).
I think Berne is a very interesting artist and a truly gifted musician
and would recommend any and all of his work (that I've heard) to
anyone.

That should be 'Fulton Street Maul'......
There are better people than me to talk about Berne, but
I thought some people could be interested by a fairly basic draft
of his discography.
This is the first version of the discography of Tim Berne.
Again, I would really appreciate any comments, corrections and extra infor-
mation which could improve the quality of this discography. Specifically, if
people could send me information and/or corrections on:
* missing records and tapes,
* incorrect references (on dates, musicians, etc),
* additional references (for vinyl, CD, or different pressings);
for example, I am still looking for information on the following records:

Of them, Spectres is very good. Olu Dara plays cornet and he uses two bassists
(John Lindberg and Ed Schuller), trombone, and drums. The others I don't know
very well, but John Carter is on #24.

1. The Ancestors (Soul Note 1061) both recorded in 1983
2. Mutant Variations (SN 1091)
Now the editorial! The "early" Tim Berne is fine, but somewhat understated
and a bit dry, despite some of the fine sidemen. The Soul Notes are both
a bit better and more coherant. And the Columbia's are excellent, very
biting and hard-edged. I think the JMT "FF" is not that great.
Berne is also on Spy vs. Spy, the John Zorn record. Very wild!!

A dissenting opinion here - I think Fractured Fairy Tales is an amazing album,
one I listen to often, finding more and more stuff inside of it. Some of it is
pretty funny, lots of references to other stuff, and a nice combination of ensemble
and solo playing.
I also like Caos Totale on JMT, although not quite as much.
