This could be a real stupid post, because I don't hear both tunes in my
head right now, nor do I have the music in front of me, but I forgot to
post this thought/question a while back: Didn't someone suggest that
Nardis was really written by J. Carisi who also wrote Israel? When I
listened to them last, I remember hearing some similarities. Has
anyone else noticed this or am I out to lunch? BTW, who is/was John
Carisi???

Yes, someone suggested that during one of our period "who REALLY wrote
Nardis and is it named after Ben Sidran or his father" discussions (yes,
this actually is a recurring topic). No one seemed to take this claim
particularly seriously, as there were no substantiating quotes to back
it up (versus lots of second or third hand stories to back up
other claims of authorship). But I remarked at the time that, from a
strictly musical "blindfold test" point of view, I found this the most
plausible of all the claims.

A composer, noted mostly for "Israel" and his contributions to a later
recording - "Into The Hot", maybe?

It was an excellent bio up until this point...

I have never heard of any of these pieces. Has anyone recorded any of
these tunes? If so, can you list pertinent details and any descriptive
review?
Thanks.
I've filled in the recordings of the tunes I could find:

The albums are:
Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool (CAPITOL)
Miles Davis/Gil Evans - Miles Ahead (COLUMBIA)
Gil Evans - Into the Hot (IMPULSE)
Marvin Stamm/John Carisi - Machinations (VERVE)
John Carisi - The Arrangers (compilation) (RCA)
Also, I believe Angkor Wat and Machinations are the same tune.

Please see the previous post for the whole list -
Thanks Jack for your research. As you can see, Carisi's music was highly
respected by those whom we respect. I believe Springsville was recorded by
J.J. Johnson and Thad Jones as well.

"Springsville" is on Miles Davis' MILES AHEAD album. Anybody have the
answer regarding any other of these compositions by John Carisi?

And can be heard on 7 tunes on "THE RCA VICTOR JAZZ WORKSHOP- THE ARRANGERS"
ND86471. (Originally recorded 1956 -RCAVJW-JOHN CARISI, but never released).
(FWIW the first 5 cuts are from "JAZZ WORKSHOP-HAL McKUSICK", 1956 and the
last 5 from "SOLID GROUND-THE ROD LEVITT ORCHESTRA",'64/65. Nice stuff.)

: Thanks.
Carisi, himself, has. At the least he's on 7 tunes (including Barry's Tune,
Israel, and Springsville from the above list) on "THE RCA VICTOR JAZZ WORK-
SHOP - THE ARRANGERS" ND86471. Originally recorded 1956 " THE RCA VICTOR
JAZZ WORKSHOP - JOHN CARISI", but was never released.
FWIW, the first 5 cuts are from "JAZZ WORKSHOP - HAL McKUSICK", also 1956
(if you're familiar with the "JAZZ WORKSHOP - GEORGE RUSSELL" then this
would be closely associated) and the last 5 are from "SOLID GROUND
- THE ROD LEVITT ORCHESTRA", '64/65.
(I've had some troubles posting with uqwk but trust you'll get the email).

Yes - haven't heard it in some time, need to give it a listen again. No
Carisi originals on this one, of course.
