With Coltrane--Live at the VV, Africa Brass, and Olé!
All these recordings alos feature Eric Dolphy, and are my favorite
Coltrane dates.
I always liked Reggie's work on these, but don't know much of his other
stuff, so I'll be following this thread with interest!

Always remember: your focus determines your reality.
Then you should certainly seek out his two (that I know of) efforts on
Postcards: SUMMIT CONFERENCE (an all-star sort of 60s date, with Hill,
Priester, etc) and CEREBRAL CAVERNS (more diverse and distinctly modern).
vince
np: CRIME JAZZ - "Daddy Long Legs" (Rhino comp)
More recently, he's on Roscoe Mitchell's In Walked Buckner, a solid
Delmark record.

If you look at the allmusic list for Reggie and the unofficial
discograph site at http://www.velocity.net/~bb10k/WORKMAN.disc.html
you'll get a start of what his phenomenal career has touched on.
Besides his Messengers stint, his work in the early 60's Coltrane
quartet and his 'residency'at Blue Note, these are the highlights
I'd recommend:
his long association with Mal Waldron including one not listed on the amg
site: Up Jumped the Devil on enja,
his work with Marilyn Crispell particularly my fave Gaia on Leo,
the single CD Monk's Japanese Folk Song with Miya Masaoka (on koto!)
and Andrew Cyrille again,
and his work with the innocuously named Trio 3 which includes Oliver
Lake and Andrew Cyrille with 2 recordings - Live at Willisau on Dizim
and Encounter on Passin Through (which is Lake's label). I haven't
heard the latter but the Live at Willisau is quite tasty. In
performance I've heard them do a killer version of Hemphill's The
Hard Blues (which rivals the smokin' versions on Jah for the JAH
Band on Minor Music - there's a piece of vinyl that needs reissuing-
and the original version on Coon Bidness).
He really should be checked out live as one of the undersung masters
of modern music. It's only in the last decade that he's come into
his own as a leader and that work (particulary Summit Conference)
really deserves more attention as well.
PS if you have trouble finding the Dizim dates, drop me a line,
we've got a local source for them.

I recall seeing Workman improvise an incredibly balanced piece of music with
members of Paul Smoker's band (was it?) and a few cats from Hal Russell's
NRG Ensemble at the Southend Music Works following a Chicago Jazz Festival
appearence (circa late 1980's early 1990's). The man's musical imagination
is stunning in it's power and flexibility.
