Here's a small sampling of "MIKE'S PICKS" - reviews that regularly appear
in Serendipity Records' big band/easy listening mail order catalog. Most
of the "picks" are classic recordings recently reissued on CD. Each review
includes at least a partial list of songs on the CD. Let us know what you
think.
My writing credits include the liner notes for the recent CD reissues (on
the great Bethlehem label) of these classic jazz vocal recordings from the
1950's (highly recommended of course!):
- Mel Torme & Marty Paich, "Mel Torme Sings Fred Astaire",
Bethlehem 20-30082
- Audrey Morris and Paula Castle, "The Girls of Bethlehem
Volume One" Bethlehem 20-40052
- Joe Derise, "The Complete Bethlehem Collection", Bethlehem
20-40012

BUDDY GRECO "16 Most Requested Songs"(Orig.EPIC Recordings) CBS
CK-53775 [stereo CD]
[ Arrangements by Al Cohn, Dave Grusin, Marty Manning, & Buddy Greco ]
***** Highest Rating !!! ******
WOW ! What a great swingin' singer is one Buddy Greco - - and how happy I
was to learn of this new release of classic sides by Buddy. Greco is
another singer who has never received his just praise. Buddy m ade a slew
of swingin' as well as ballad LPs for the EPIC label during the sixties..
all of which
are now alas long, long out-of-print, and are collector's items. Besides
Buddy's great singing on those albums, he was surrounded by some of the
finest jazz sidemen any vocalist could dream for. A large number of the
swingin' LPs were arranged by the late great Al Cohn, and believe me, if
you've never heard any of these Greco/Cohn sides, this CD will blow you
away!! You can immediately feel, from the very first track on this CD,
Greco's great joy for performing - his smiling enthusiasm simply jumps out
at you, it's just so good.
Songs: "The Lady is a Tramp" (a swingin' gem), "Like Young" (this Andre
Previn original never sounded better), "Something's Gotta Give", "This
Could Be the Start of Something Big" (my favorite rendition of this Steve
Allen classic -- Steve & Eydie, stand back!), "I Love Being Here with You"
(Al
Cohn arrangement with Buddy swingin' as only Buddy can), "Around the
World" (this tune was a pretty good size hit for Buddy, and with Al Cohn's
great arrangement you can see why), "Roses of Picardy" (another swingin'
winner), "Teach Me Tonight", "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", "My
Kind of
Girl" (although Matt Monro had the monster hit of this tune, Buddy's
version is also a winner in my book), "At Long Last Love" (this is another
trademark Greco tune which I dig).
If you like music that really swings, you'll love this CD. I sure do!

NELSON RIDDLE "Best of the Capitol Years"
CAP/EMI CDEMS-1489 [mono Import CD]
[ 24 tracks. Includes biographical booket ]
BBC Big Band commentator/music specialist Alan Dell states in the notesfor
this CD: "Nelson Riddle was the most influential arranger of the
last 45 years". "His output was enormous and the artists for whom he wrote
arrangements were unbelievably diverse". Yes indeed,Riddle had learned his
craft well, arranging during the forties for such varied bands as Charlie
Spivak, Tommy Dorsey and Bob Crosby. So well, that by the time he made his
debut as staff arranger at CAPITOL in 1950 he was full of innovative ideas
that were to influence countless arrangers that followed. Without
question, Sinatra & Nat Cole in particular owe much of their fifties
recording success to Nelson. When Linda Ronstadt wanted to break away from
her rock image and launch a new phase of her career singing great American
standards, she knew how important it was to affiliate herself with an
arranger that who could teach her the ropes of Tin Pan Alley. My opinion
is that Nelson Riddle was as much responsible for Linda's great pop
success as Linda herself was!
This British CD re-issue (hopefully the first of many!), combines two of
the rarest of all Riddle albums from 1957: long-out-of-print collector's
items called "Hey...Let Yourself Go", and "C'Mon...Get Happy!" (or sit)
amazed at the wonderful sound transfers that British CAPITOL has done
here. Stereo or no stereo, everything is perfectly balanced, crystal-clear
and full. Songs include: "Let's Face the Music & Dance", "You Are My Lucky
Star", "You and the Night and the Music", "For All We Know", "Younger Than
Springtime", "You're an Old Smoothie", "Without a Song", "Am I Blue",
"Something to Remember You By", "September in the Rain", and more.
Although Riddle is no longer with us, the music he created will live
forever. It is impossible to over-estimate his influence on up-and-coming
arrangers and singers who listen and study his output now.. and in the
future. That's the thing about greatness: it is never outmoded. Highly
recommended!!

NAT "KING" COLE (with Stan Kenton & Count Basie) "Big Band Cole"
CAP./BLUE NOTE 96259 [stereo/mono CD]
These tracks take Nat back to his jazz roots. The Basie-backed tunes were
originally done for a 1958 album called "Welcome To The Club". Charts for
the session were done by a man familiar to fans of music eminating from
the Capitol Tower: Dave Cavanaugh.
Among the songs are "She's Funny That Way", "I Want a Little Girl", "Mood
Indigo", "Avalon", "Baby Won't You Please Come Home", & "Madrid". The
latter song stems from Cole's 'Trio' period, and is re-recorded here with
a Billy May arrangement. It's the only non-Cavanaugh arrangement of the
Basie tracks, and was left off the original album.. making it a bonus for
Cole & May
fans. Astonishingly, even though they worked for the same record label,
Nat Cole and Stan Kenton never recorded a complete album
together.Represented among the Cole/Kenton collaborations here is:
"Jam-Bo" (a Shorty Rogers composition), "Steady", "My Love", & two
versions of the Pete Rugolo-arranged hit "Orange Colored Sky" (the
original mono track and the stereo re-do recorded ten years later).
Nat, Stan & the Count.. doing music with a Big Band/Jazz flavor.
It's tasty!

JOE DERISE "The Complete Bethlehem Collection"
BETHLEHEM 40012 [mono CD]
[ with The Australian Jazz Quintet and others ] (Liner Notes by: Mike
Lund)
Yours Truly was given the opportunity to write the extensive liner notes
about this wonderful singer... a vocalist I feel is one of the finest of
the relatively unknown song stylists ever to grace a microphone. Please
take my word for it: if you play this CD and have not heard Derise before,
you will immediately be astonished by the sheer beauty and expressiveness
of this singer !If put on the spot to actually describe who Joe sounds
like, I would say a combination of the qualities of Vic Damone, Mel Torme,
Jack Jones and Frank Sinatra put together.. but most definately always
with his own unique style.
The songs on this extensive CD are marvelous and include: "It Might as
Well Be Spring", "My Romance", "How High the Moon", "Mountain Greenery",
"How Long Has This Been Going On", "A Fine Romance", "Personality",
"Swingin' On a Star", "S'Wonderful" "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive",
"Spring in Old New York", and lots more.
Derise started with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Ray McKinley and Claude
Thornhill before launching his solo career... which has taken him around
the world. These absolutely impeccable BETHLEHEM recordings from the
mid-fifties are by far his finest. The sound quality is so terrific, you
would think these sides were made yesterday. Everything is up-front, clear
and bright. A real tribute to Tom Moulton, the engineering wizard at
BETHLEHEM who remastered these vintage recordings.
***** This CD gets my highest possible rating

THE SPITFIRE BAND "10th Anniversary:1981-91"
TEMBO MPCD-4401 [stereo Import CD]
[ Great Big Band Era tunes, played in the authentic style ] (Canadian
Import- Digital Sound)
Since the mid 1980's, people from all over the country had been asking us,
"Do you have recordings by the Spitfire Band from Canada?". Since there
was not a USA distributor to be found for this marvelous band, we always
had to say "So sorry, we wish we could say 'yes', but we have none". In
1992, a long-time friend & customer named Alan, who lives in Canada (& is
an executive for the premiere magazine of that country) kindly offered to
inquire about the import status of Spitfire Band recordings for us. As a
result, a gentleman named Jackie Rae (the original organizer of the band
in 1981.. and a former crackerjack Spitfire Pilot) called to introduce
himself and to inform me the band was alive and still swingin'. In fact,
he said they had just released a new "10th Anniversary" Compact Disc which
they were very excited about, and hoped to find someone in the USA to sell
it for them. Well, as "Serendipity" would have it, this was a most welcome
phone call and a happy SURPRISE. (Thank you, Alan). A few days later, a
sample CD arrived for me to review in these PICKS, courtesy of Tembo Music
of Canada. From beginning to end, this CD is non-stop pleasure. Every
tune is a winner, played with authentic style and pizazz by this 18-piece
swing band.
This marvelous CD has something for everyone.. even a couple of
Christmas tunes (done in Big-Band style, of course). Here is a list of
some of them: "Just in Time", "Marie", "At Last", "New York, New York",
"I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart", "Days of Wine & Roses", "Sleigh
Ride/Here Comes Santa Claus medley", "Hey There", "I've Heard That Song
Before", "They Can't Take That Away from Me"...
Includes excellent liner notes, as well as complete roster of personnel.

The sound quality bright & spacious. Some of the tunes include: "Strike Up
the Band", "It's Been a Long, LongTime", "Laura", "The More I See You",
"Serenade in Blue",
"There I've Said It Again", "Witchcraft", "Skyliner", and more.

and only voice of Jo Stafford. Style, grace and wonderful arrangements are
present on every track - and any Jo Stafford fan will welcome this

MATT MONRO "A Time For Love" (24 Tracks - 69 Mins.of Music)
EMI CDMFP-6070 [stereo CD]
Few singers at Serendipity are as consistantly popular as the late, great
Matt Monro. He was in my opinion, the finest pop singer that evercame out
of Great Britain. This CD compilation, like all Monro performances, is
full of great singing of fine songs. Songs include: "Why Not Now" (superb
arrangement by Johnny Spence, and my favorite tune here), "When Love
Comes Along","Time After Time", "With These Hands", "Be My Love", "In the
Arms of Love", "Love Walked In", "Till Then My Love" (a dramatic ballad),
"Can This Be Love", "You Light Up My Life", "The Music Played", and more.
Once again we offer you a fine Monro collection, which will give you much
musical pleasure over & over again.

LES ELGART "Best of the Big Bands"(his earliest recordings)CBS CK-48909
[mono CD]
The Brothers Elgart (Les & Larry) of New London, Connecticut
recorded dozens of albums for COLUMBIA from the mid 50's thru the
60's.Sorry to say that we'll probably never see this huge output
transferred to CD.. but we've got a good start with this Compact Disc - -
and a second one listed at the bottom of this review.
This 18-track compilation is sub-titled "Sophisticated Swing", named for
Les' first album.. which is re-issued in its' entirety here. The remainder
of the tracks include tunes from his "Band of the Year" album, plus 3
tracks never-before-issued. A good portion of the credit for the
infectious, effervescent style of the Elgart band can be given to arranger
Charles Albertine. Over the years, Albertine worked closely with Les to
fine-tune the sound which is unique to this band, and makes it immediately
recognizable whenever you hear it.
Songs include "Bendix Bounce", "Soon", "Varsity Drag", "Zing Went the
Strings of My Heart", plus those 3 songs from the vaults which are
released here for the first time: "Senior Hop", "Easy Pickin'", & "Big Man
on Campus". Larry takes sax solos among the tracks, and trumpeter Bernie
Glow has some solo work too. The second CD features the brothers' combined
talents:
[LES & LARRY ELGART "Best of the Big Bands" CBS CK-45337 stereo/mono

Most of the tracks on this one are taken from their "Swingtime" album of
Big Band standards, and includes: "One O'Clock Jump","Woodchopper's Ball",
"Skyliner", "String of Pearls", "Caravan", and much more (20 tunes in
all).

JIMMY ROSELLI "When Your Old Wedding Ring Was New"
[standards with string orchestral accompaniment ]
M & R MRCD-31035 [stereo CD]
M & R CA-1035 [stereo CASSETTE]
The title tune of this recording is one of our most-requested numbers by
a male vocalist. The sentimental nature of the lyrics simply grabs the
listeners' attention wherever it's played on the radio --- and it gets
wide airplay on Big Band/Pop stations around the country.
Roselli has chosen other equally-sentimental ballads & vintage up-tempo
tunes for this collection, including "Always", "Ain't She Sweet", "A
Little Bit of Heaven", "By the Light of the Silvery Moon", "Cuddle Up a
Little Closer", and others

LESTER LANIN "Best of the Big Bands" (Dance Music)CBS EK-46149 [mono
CD]
We have quite a few dance studios who come to us in search of dancable
tunes for their classes and events. When they're looking for that
spritely sound known as "Society Dance Tempo", the choice is clear. The
likes of Meyer Davis, Harry Marshard and Francis Walther have all done it,
and done it well. But the undisputed king of Society music is Lester
Lanin.
This CD consists of the contents of a long-out-of-print 2-LP set called
"The Lester Lanin Dance Album". This was one of the few albums Lanin made
in which individual numbers were spotlighted. Usually, his recordings were
made up
of 6 or 7 lengthy medleys of tunes. This album was the one and only time
that each dance step was isolated on a single track. So it makes a perfect
beginning to what we hope will be more Lanin re-issues. For example the
tunes include: "Just in Time"(Moderate Society), "Glow Worm"(Cha Cha), "If
Ever I Would Leave You"(Rhumba), "Colonel Bogey"(Merengue), "Adios, Pampa
Mia!"(Tango), and "Merry Midow"(Viennese Waltz). There are other tunes
devoted to the Samba, Mambo, Fox Trot, Twist, Paso Doble, and even the
Polka and the Hula! 28 tracks in all.
Lanin's "orchestras" are still in demand all over the country, and the
Maestro himself will still put in an appearance as conductor now and
again.. at a Debutante Cotillion at Martha's Vineyard.. or a Ball in
Manhattan. When you've worn your shoe leather dancing to this one, try:
[LANIN "This is Society Dance Music" mono CD CBS CK-53134 $16.98]
Also check into the LASERLIGHT series of CDs by various orchestras, each
devoted to a single dance step, such as Tango, Mambo, Waltz, etc. See them
listed as "Dance Music" in the BIG BANDS section of the CD listings in

GREAT GIRL SINGERS (23 Tracks from Capitol Archives)CAP. SLB-6952

Ella Fitzgerald, Helen O'Connell, Ella Mae Morse, Judy Garland, Jane
Froman, Billie Holiday, Margaret Whiting, June Christy, Edith Piaf,
Frances Langford, Kay Starr, Anita O'Day, Jo Stafford, HelenForrest, June
Hutton, and the Andrews Sisters... they're ALL included on this wonderful
2-LP Record compilation set!
CAPITOL really went into their vaults and outdid themselves with this hit
package, and even includes pictures of these great vocalists. Hits
include: "Cow Cow Boogie", "My Ideal", "Moonlight in Vermont", "With a
Song in My Heart", "Memories of You", "Long Ago & Far Away", "Doctor,
Lawyer, Indian Chief", "Dream a Little Dream of Me", "Midnight Sun",
"Symphony", "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance", "All of Me", "I'll Be
Seeing You" & 10 more. Many of the selections here are available nowhere
else, not even on CD re-issues.
The pressings for this LP set were done in Canada and they are
excellent, as is the sound quality. We had a quantity of these a couple of
years back...sold them all... and then found we could not get any more.
Recently we coaxed our distributors to search the corners of their
warehouses, & one of them came up with a small supply for us.

NELSON RIDDLE & HIS ORCH. with KIRI TE KANAWA "Blues Skies"
LONDON 414666-2 [stereo CD]
[ 12 Great American Popular Song Standards - - - Riddle's last great
recording session ]
I really love this CD, and since I have been told it was the last
commercial arranging & conducting sessions Nelson made before his early
death, it is particularly important to me. Singer Kiri Te Kanawa was, for
many years, a great fan & collector of Riddle recordings and the making of
this album was adream come true for her. Although Kiri has made many pop
albums since this one (a couple with Andre Previn, and one with Michel
Legrand), in my opinion none of them come close to this Riddle
collaboration. I think the reason for the magic is the great creative
simplicity of Riddle's arrangements. Unlike Previn, and especially
Legrand, who tend to over-arrange for singers..Riddle knew his craft so
very well, and never overpowered - but beautifully supported his singers.
I believe Riddle was the greatest arranger for singers we've ever known.
Believe me this CD is a joy from Track #1 to conclusion, and will quickly
become a favorite for you, as it has become for me. Kiri's gorgeous
singing is immediately inspiring & full of understanding. You can really
sense the great enthusiasm & rapport she feels working with Nelson Riddle
throughout every track.
Songs include: "Blue Skies" (my favorite track, great arrangement), "It
Might As Well Be Spring", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Speak Low",
"Yesterdays", "So In Love", "How High the Moon", "Gone With the Wind",
"When I Grow Too Old to Dream", "True Love", "The Folks Who Live On the
Hill" (lovely arrangement & vocal performance). Trust Mike - - - this is
a CD Gem!!!

THE HI-LO'S "Cherries and Other Delights!"
HINDSIGHT HCD-603 [mono CD]
[ Never-commercially-released recordings! 15 tracks ]
I've always been a true fan of the Hi-Lo's, right from the first time I
heard them sing "Dancing on the Ceiling"... and they knocked me out. In
the business I'm in, I've heard just about every vocal group you can come
up with, BUT then we come to the Hi-Lo's - and you forget about all the
rest. Why? Because from the standpoint of sheer musicianship, musicality
and glorious singing, the fabulous Hi-Lo's are in a league all their own.
Just ask any professional jazz musician who knows the work of the Hi-Lo's,
and they'll agree. These tracks were originally done for the United
States Navy, and a radio program called "Navy Swings" in 1961, & the sound
quality of this CD is terrific.. it compares with any of their COLUMBIA
sides. This CD also includes very interesting notes, with each of the four
Hi-Lo's commenting on their years together as a vocal group. Although no
longer performing, we can now only hope with a CD like this, that other
labels like COLUMBIA, REPRISE, and MCA will take the hint and re-issue
some of the wonderful long-out-of-print albums that have been sitting in
their vaults for 30 years!!! At least COLUMBIA has made some effort. See
our review of "And All That Jazz" on Pg.3 of the Master Catalog.
Songs on this great CD include: "The Lady in Red", "My Little Grass
Shack", "I Could Write a Book", "(Back Home Again in) Indiana","Georgia On
My Mind", "Ol' Rockin' Chair", "April Snow"(lovely rare Romberg tune),
"Lulu's Back in Town", "Lazy Afternoon", "You Must Have Been a Beautiful
Baby", "Down By the Sally Gardens"(beautiful British folk song, sung to
ballad perfection).. & more.

FRANK CHACKSFIELD "Streaks of Lavender" (his last recordings)
OMEGA W-0212 [stereo CD}
[ Beautiful Melodies by England's Great Arranger / Conductor ]
(16 tracks in crystal-clear sound )
I'm so very happy that someone saw fit to issue the first-ever commercial
CD in America by this legendary easy-listening arranger.Though it's on a
very small independent label, the quality is very high. We can thank
producer Marlin Taylor for this, and his long commitment to good music
recordings
for many many years. Thanks Marlin!
Since the first time I heard the great "Ebb Tide" arrangement (the
one with all the sea gulls & crashing waves in the background
...remember?), I was taken with the wonderful atmospheric arrangements of
Frank Chacksfield. His long recording career & dozens of albums covering
three decades, are sought by collectors world-wide. Despite all of Frank's
success, there had not been an available Chacksfield recording in any
format for many years, until this new CD issue. Frank is now retired &
living in England.. and these recordings are the last he made. They are
truly beautiful & relaxing.
Songs include: "Dream", "I Don't Want to Walk Without You", "Let's Make
the Most of a Beautiful Thing", "Streaks of Lavender", "Innishannon"
(lovely Chacksfield original), "Theme from 'Chariots of Fire'", "Ballad
for Adeline", "That Look in Your Eyes", "Soft Lights", "Out in the Sun",
and many more.
There are a number of gorgeous original tunes here, written by long-time
Chacksfield collaborators Fred Waugh & Vic Harris.. & these will be a
treat for your ears. Thank you Frank, for more than a quarter of a century
of beautiful music.
