Does anyone know if lyrics were written for Thelonious Monk's music? If
lyrics were written, who and where are they available from.

Thanx for your cooperation...

Of course there have been lyrics to "Round Midnight" for quite awhile
and years ago, Gene McDaniels recorded "Straight, No Chaser" with
really cool lyrics. Others have recorded that as well. Years ago, Jon
Hendrick recorded "In Walked Bud" on an Art Blakey and the Jazz
Messengers LP. Abbey Lincoln has recorded "Blue Monk" at least twice.
Carmen McRae did a whole CD of Monk tunes with lyrics, "Carmen Sings
Monk" which includes "Get It Straight" ("Straight, No Chaser" and
different from the McDaniels-recorded lyric); "Dear Ruby" (Ruby, My
Dear); "It's Over Now" ("Well You Needn't"); "Monkery's the Blues"

Check out "Carmen Sings Monk" by Carmen McRae on Novus. I think that
most of the lyrics were by Jon Hendricks but I can't remember for sure.

A good place to start is Carmen McRae's Carmen Sings Monk.(Novus
3086-2-N). This is a lovely album whether or not you want the lyrics.

Would anyone know of a complete collection of monk tunes, if so,
where available?

Thanks,

This is a little off-topic, but I wonder if anyone knows why it is that the
tunes on "Carmen Sings Monk" are all retitled, "Well You Needn't" becoming
"It's Over Now," etc.

The liner notes mutter something unintelligible about publishing problems, but
I've always wondered whether it had to do with getting royalties to the
lyric-writers.
