I keep hearing people referring to him in the past tense. Did he die
recently? I don't remember seeing any obituaries on him?

He died in, I believe, November '92. Don Pullen wrote a song in his memory
called 'Ah George, We Hardly Knew Ya' which appears on 'Stablemates' by
Roots as well, I think, on an album under Pullen's own name (don't know
which).

I did hear that he died about 6 months after the fact on a jazz
radio show. I can't remember seeing an obit anywhere, not even
Downbeat (although they must have had something in Final Bar).
In any case, I found him to be a criminally underrated tenor
player. Does anyone have a George Adams discography? I imagine
some of his work would be hard to trace since he recorded for
several small European labels (e.g., Horo).

This morning (9/27) Phil Schaap said that tenor saxophonist
J.R. Monterose died yesterday, of cancer. No further details.
He was mostly identified with bop but probably heard most widely
on Mingus's _Pithecanthropus Erectus_.

Cadence had it, I think in December.

In a Cadence interview Montrose said that he thought that album "sucked".
Both the interviewer (though I can't remember who, maybe Bob Rusch?) and
myself disagree. Was Montrose also on "The Clown" ?

Oh too bad. He was a strong muscular tenor who recorded way too
little in his life. Other than the classic Mingus, and the two
records below, I believe there were one or two other Xanadu's
(which is Don Schlitten's label, defiantly LP-only, that specializes
in issuing various studio and/or live sessions, probably from his
own collection -- which must be huge given Schlitten's decades as
a jazz producer.)

I'm sorry to hear this. He had an lp on Uptown called "Live in Albany"
which I liked quite a bit. Apparently he had, during this time, spent
most of his playing time around the Albany area.

FYI: By coincidence, I picked up a new Japanese re-issue of this one over
the weekend. It is still available. But not cheap. I paid $24.
Does anyone know of a mail order place where the Japanese re-issues
can be gotten cheaper? It's very nice by the way.

As Bill Kenz already mentioned there is the Live in Albany LP, which is the
only one I've got (and Monterose's first album recorded in the US since
1960):

J.R. Monterose, Live in Albany, Uptown UP 27.02, released 1980.
Monterose ts, Hod O'Brien p, Teddy Kotick b, Eddie Robinson d.
Rec. at Lark Tavern in Albany, 5/8/79.
tracks: The Shadow of Your Smile, Ruby My Dear, Lu-An, Just Friends.

A fine album; you also get to hear the underrecorded Hod O'Brien. Its
liner notes were written by the producer (Robert Sunenblick, M.D.) who
appears to be a committed fan - anyway, I copied out the other albums
he says Monterose appeared on. (Other trivia: Monterose said of Mingus,
"You had to play his brain," and left after Mingus belted Jackie McLean;
and in 1960 or so he played in the touring band for Jay and the
Americans (?!) - "it was pretty awful.")

The list may not be complete, but even so there's awfully few - he
never made as many gigs as a sideman as you'd expect.

An excellent album, a pity the recording quality wasn't better...

There is also :-

"Bebeop live and loose" which features some of his soprano playing
and a typical Monterose treatment of Green Dolphin Street.
