Just the way it looks, actually. He tunes the bottom three strings are tuned
just like the bottom three strings of a bass (EAD) and the top five guitar
strings are tuned just like the top five strings of a guitar (ADGBE). He
then sends the bass strings straight to a bass amp, and the guitar strings
through a Korg G4 Leslie speaker simulator, a volume pedal, a wah and into
a guitar amp. The frets are angled the way they are so that the scale length
remains consistant for each string, since a bass has a longer scale than a
guitar. Looks like it would have horrible intonation problems, but it works.
If you like Charlie Hunter's playing, there is a great lesson with him in the
November Guitar Player magazine.
