Anyway, here's some related stuff I have (and haven't) liked: On the "Home
Cookin'" compilation, I like the tracks by by Greyboy and by The Rhythm
Section. On the "Up and Down Club Sessions" compilation I like the Josh Jones
Jazz Ensemble. I like some of the US 3 stuff (mostly "Cantaloop," "Tukka
Yoot's Riddim," and "Different Rhythms..."). I wasn't overly impressed by
Guru's Jazzmatazz. I also wasn't bowled over by the "Rebirth of Cool"
compilation (the one released in the US), though I like the MC Solaar track
(I've also liked other MC Solaar stuff I've heard), and the Ronny Jordan and
Stereo MC's tracks are OK, too. I like the instrumental tracks on Miles
Davis' "doo-bop" (especially "High Speed Chase) -- and just about everything
else Miles has done (especially "On the Corner"). Also, some of the 70's
jazz-funk stuff is pretty cool, though I'm not all that familiar with it
(recommendations would be welcome here, too) -- I like a lot of the stuff on
the "Blue Break Beats" compilation (especially Richard Groove Holmes and Grant
Green). And then there's more distantly related stuff like Prime Time, some
James Blood Ulmer, Art Ensemble of Chicago, and on and on...
Anyway, that's quite a laundry list, isn't it? If you want, just go ahead and
ignore the previous paragraph...

Have a go at...
Ronnie Laws (esp 75-80, not much after Every Generation)
Herbie Hancock
Lonnie Liston Smith (Cosmic Echoes espec.)
Donald Byrd
Eddie Henderson
Azymuth
Harvey Mason (Funk in a Mason Jar)
Al DiMeola
Ramsey Lewis (work with EWF)
...for starters. Most interesting period for these guys w.r.t. Jazz-Funk
around '75-'80. For me Ronnie Laws, around that time defines that music
style.
Enjoy.
Al DiMeola--Acid Jazz??? Sober up.
A friend of mine recently wrote about the latest compilations... I had the
chance to borrow a few--the best acid jazz collections among a whole stack
were those put out by Instinct--"This is AJ vol. 3" & vo. 4 were excellent,
and consistently very high quality. I also liked their European collection
called "Back to Basics" -- (heavy James Brown vibe)...
The Scotti Bros. compilations I liked less--but "Everything's Going To The
Beat" definitely had some eccentric gems in the English House/rap vein.
If you're looking for a group album that's also a great jazz release--and
IMO as good as any of the compilations, try "Groove Collective" on
Warner Bros...
