The song is probably "I'm a Woman" by Coco (Koko, or Cocoa, depending upon
which album/label/concert) Taylor. Her song is a derivation of Bo Diddley's
(and Muddy Waters) I'm a Man, which is musically similar (identical?) to
Hoochie Coochie Man.

I'm pretty sure I've seen Valerie Wellington do this song live. She's got
one album (CD) out on Alligator called _Million Dollar Secret_, and she's,
in my opinion, the best female blues singer in Chicago these days.

I think Koko Taylor also does this, as she was at the last Valerie Wellington
show I saw, and I kind of remember Valerie mentioning something about Koko and
that song. By the way, Koko's also pretty good, though I like Valerie more.

Yes, the person singing it (and I think she wrote it in response to
Muddy Waters' song) is Koko Taylor. You can find it on one of
her Alligator releases, Live from Chicago, An Audience with the Queen.

Maria Muldaur did it first, with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band.

I did not see the Cosby show, but from the description it sounds
like the song in question is "I'm A Woman". This is the women's
version of Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy" - not to be confused with
"Hoochie Coochie Man".

"I'm a Woman" has been performed by many vocalists from KoKo Taylor
to Miss Piggy, but the most played version I've heard is by Ko Ko.

My guess is Koko Taylor, calling it, perhaps, "I'm A Woman"

I was in the Jazz Record Mart in Chicago this weekend and almost purchased
Valarie's CD, but then I saw all the Koko Taylor, and then I saw all the
Katie Webster. I decided not to buy anything until I know more about
the recordings. I've seen Valerie and Koko in concert, but not Katie, and
I know almost nothing about their CD's.

Any comments?

Koko Taylor adapted "Hoochie Coohie Man". I didn't
see the Cosby Show but my guess is that's who the blues
performer was.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Yes, it is on Koko Taylor's first or second Alligator album.
I have heard her do it live, too.

IMO, she can be pretty awesome live!
