Take this with a grain of salt, but the one album that leaps to my mind is
the Ornette Coleman/Howard Shore collaboration on the soundtrack for
"Naked Lunch".
My recollection is that it's out of print, but I'm sure there are copies
in used bins...*somewhere*...

Chuck:
I don't think there is anything else like Angelo Badalamenti (this is
the correct spelling). Except maybe John Coltrane's "Intersteller
Space" :)
However, I searched the copyright file at the Library of Congress.
You might be interested to know that he has copyrighted a bunch of
songs, some of them under the pseudoname: Andy Badale. He wrote an
Opium perfume jingle. He wrote the theme music for "Inside the Actors'
Studio", seen on TV's Bravo channel. He wrote music for the XXV Summer
Olympics in Barcelona, 1992. There's a cd by him and a guy named Booth,
"Booth and the Bad Angel" on Fontina/Mercury. And the movie soundtrack
albums from "Cousins" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street--3" were both
composed and arranged by Badalamenti. None of this have I heard, except
for the "Inside the Actors' Studio" music, which is very "Twin
Peaks"-like but lasts about one minute.
This "Twin Peaks" stuff does not sound too jazzy to me. Perhaps you
would do better to look elsewhere. Say, among fans of Trance Music or
some other related genre.
By the way, I have the Julie Cruise cd where she sings the
Badalamenti songs. And I once tried to interest a band I was in to play
"Falling", but they weren't interested. I thought it would be good to
play it at wedding receptions :)

Just wanted to say I really like this "Naked Lunch" cd. At the time I
heard a review of it on National Public Radio and then picked it up
there hadn't been much new Ornette out there. He plays well over
Shore's string orchestra. And the string writing is dense, the mood
tense, somewhat static. There's some Ornette with acoustic bass and
drums and some Ornette with Moroccan musicians. All in all, some of my
favorite movie music. But Chuck may find this one too weird. The
lushness is there, but it is a bit more dissonant than "Twin Peaks"
music (and there is no twangy guitar) :)
Here's a movie soundtrack recommendation: Glenngarry Glen Ross--a
jazz-oriented soundtrack with Wayne Shorter. There are some vocals:
Jimmy Scott, Al Jarreau. (Not much "Twin Peaks" content.)

It's called 'Floating into the Night'. Spacey and ethereal sounding. Not
jazz, but what the heck.

Although not necessarily similar in arrangement or orchestration,
Badalamenti's compositions are often very reminiscent (some might say
derivative) of Nino Rota's. (Check out his score for "Cousins," the
American film version of "_Cousin, Cousine_," e.g.) The "Twin Peaks"
music is, of course, a lot spacier than anything Rota ever wrote, but if
you sped it up and added a few more instruments.... :-)

Sorry for the ambiguity in my previous article. The "Cousins" score is by
Badalamenti.

How about Bobby Hutcherson Blue Note cd's? The Hal Wilner project Amacord Nino Rota, if your'e not a "jazz expert" but like Twin peaks, then get Miles Davis Kind of Blue and at least find a good place to start.

To my ears Tom Waits, and John Lurie are in a similar bag. Maybe even KD
Lang and Chris Isaacs. Sometimes. Sorta.

Theres also a Marianne Faithful CD "A Secret Life" that's been orchestrated
by Badalamenti. I prefer this to the Julee Cruise. I've got the Booth disk
(ex "James") and it doesn't work at all for me - definitely a long way from
jazz.
Cheers
