I know the article you mean - I think it's called "Heaven & Hell" (or that's
what it is on my wants list! Has the tracks 'Mr Kicks' and 'The snake'? I've
seen it a couple of times in Soul Jazz records, Ingestre Place, London at
about 25 pounds, but that was a year or so ago. It does come up time to time
- Soul Jazz is usually a good place to try for that sort of stuff.

I've never seen a reissue of it.

Also try 'Sin & Soul' by the man with the excellent 'Work Song' and 'Dat Dere'
as featured on the Streetsounds Jazz Juice LPs (3 & 2 repectively). That LP
is on columbia / CBS records - I should think 'Heaven & Hell' is also

hi! when i saw your query i gave osacr brown jr. a call to ask whether his
works are available on CD. he said that sony purchased some of his old
works, and soon a CD will be released entitled *sin & sould, and then
some* which will include a couple of cuts from "between heaven and hell."

oscar has a CD out now, that was recorded and released last year. his late
son, oscar brown iii ("bobo"), arranged the music and played bass. the
tunes are:

dat dere
opportunity please knock
somebody buy me a drink
signifyin' monkey
afro blue
work song
rags and old iron
elegy
honeydo
give me more
the entertainer
hymn to the homeless
debris
cyberspace is the place
journey through forever
old man

the CD is on weasel disc records, # 7 44213 33342 4. if you can't find it
at your local music store, call 415/621-3981.

_Between Heaven and Hell_ was his second album for Columbia (the first
was titled _Sin and Soul_):

Oscar Brown, Jr. / Between Heaven and Hell
Columbia mono CL-1774 / stereo CS-8574
c1962
Contents: Mr. Kicks
Hazel's hips
Excuse me for livin'
Lucky guy
Forbidden fruit
Opportunity, please knock
side 2: Elegy (Plain Black Boy)
Sam's life
Hymn to Friday
Love is like a new born child
When Malindy sings
World full of grey

"The snake" is on his fourth Columbia disc (the third was _In a New
Mood_):

Oscar Brown , Jr. / Tells it like it is!
Columbia mono CL-2025 / stereo CS-8825
c1963
Contents:
Sing Hallelujah
One foot in the gutter
So help me
Man, earnest boy
The tree and me
Jeannine
side 2: The snake
A young girl
All blues
If I only had
Tall like pine

I found my copies in the mid-sixties in a cut-out bin in either Ottawa
or Toronto. If there was an album with both "Mr. Kicks" and "The
snake" on it, it was either a subsequently-issued greatest hits
compilation or a non-North American issue.

I have a copy of this lp. It's absolutely great. He has about three on
Columbia from that period, one of which was from a stage show (escaping me
at the moment). What happened to him?

He's still around. He's based in Chicago and performs with his family
pretty regularly in the area. I think he's head of music/arts at the
DuSable Museum.

I found "Sin and Soul" in my dad's record collection (and he acquired it
way before I introduced him to jazz) and I found "Oscar Brown Jr Tells It
Like It Is" for a few bucks at a used vinyl store.

Greetings,
I was wondering, has "A Ladies Man" ever been reissued?

oscar's affiliation with the dusable museum ended a couple of years ago.
at present he's appearing here and there--right now he's at the 113 club
on 47th street (in chicago) thursday through saturday. his new CD is
getting a bit of airplay, and as i said in an earlier post, he's
anticipating a CD release by sony with several of his best tunes (a
reissue).

he's still adjusting to the death of his son, bassist bobo (oscar brown
iii). oscar also appears with his daughter maggie, who also has a new CD
out featuring many of her dad's tunes. it's smokin'!!!
(and no--i'm not their publicist :D i'm a family friend. oscar grew up
with my dad.)

I was saddened to hear of the death of Oscar Brown Jr's son. I first heard
'Dat Dere' when my son was very small, and it always made me smile. I always
thought the lyrics must have been based on personal experience (it's sung with
such warmth). Anybody know?

"dat dere" was inspired by the many questions oscar brown iii ("bobo")
would ask when he was around 4 years old. until bobo's death last month,
oscar would add to the end of the tune (in live performances): "and now
that quizzical kid grew up and traded in that elephant for a big ol' bass
..." and he'd gesture toward his bassist, his son (to wild applause). it's
sad--he won't be able to do that anymore. if he chooses to still perform
dat dere oscar will probably add a little tribute to bobo.

Oscar Brown Jr. released his first album in 20 years earlier this
year entitled "Then & Now". If you would like to read more about it,

What I can't understand is that not one of the record companies
he released his 10 LPs on between 1960 and 1975 has bothered to
re-issue any of them. These labels are Columbia, Fontana, RCA
and Atlantic Records. I'm pleased to have read in one of the previous
postings in this thread that Sony is releasing a greatest hits sort
of CD but that's hardly enough. Something in the order of a boxed
set covering his whole career would be better. The least Columbia
can do is reissue his classic albums "Sin & Soul", "Between Heaven
& Hell" and "Tells It Like It Is".

Someone wrote earlier that his daughter Maggie has a new CD out
on which she does several of her father's songs. Can this person
post the title and label/catalog # on this newsgroup or please
email me?

I have all 10 LPs of his and believe it or not, I managed to find
them with great difficulty and after many months via the used LP
dealers who are on the net. It took over a 100 emails to different
dealers, several postings on the vinyl newsgroups and hours upon
hours of surfing the www for used and rare LP websites.

maggie's CD is entitled *from my window* and it smokes!!! musicians on the
CD include calvin "koco" brunson and bethany pickens on keys, oscar "bobo"
brown iii and chuck webb on bass, steve cobb and james knowles on drums,
alan burroughs on guitar, duke payne on soprano sax, and paul cottons on
percussion.

the tunes are:
from my window
summer in the city
feather
only for the passion
sounded so good
sexy silhouette
manhattan island paradise
excuse me for living
long ago
it's october
never too late

nearly all the tunes were written or cowritten by oscar brown jr (her
dad), with from my window, summer in the city, and excuse me for living
being previousy recorded by him. a couple of the tunes were written or
cowritten with oscar brown iii. this is a self-produced CD, so for more
