I've been looking for Charles Mingus's Candid 1960 sessions on
CD, and can't find them anywhere ... it looks like they have
gone out of print again.

I have "Mingus" on CD, and "Charles Mingus Presents Charles
Mingus" on a 1970s Barnaby LP. Anyone know where I can still
find the others:

"Reincarnation of a Lovebird"
"Newport Rebels"
"Mysterious Blues" (does this overlap the other two?)
and a CD copy of "Presents" ...

Thanks,

Try Mosaic Records. (They have a website.) They released the complete
sessions in a box a few years ago. Don't know if it's still available,
though. All their stuff is limited editions.

I would try www.candidrecords.com They have recently reissued some Otis
Spann which I have been wanting and I believe your Mingus CD`s are listed as
being in their catalogue. They have an email address for questions. Hope
this helps

The Mosaic is out-of-print. I wouldn't mind finding one myself. You best
hope is probably waiting for the Candid CD reissues.

The Mosaic set gets over $200 on Ebay, when it (rarely) shows
up ... it's been out of print for years.

Thanks ... looks like the disks are available in the UK. I've
written them about USA distribution.

Possibly answering parts of your query not covered in other posts, the
NEWPORT REBELS (Barnaby BR-5022, 1960 LP) contains as its lead tune an 8:35
track of "Mysterious Blues," which Mingus composed on the date. A Mingus
completist may have information to the contrary, but I don't think a
legitimate "Mysterious Blues" album exists.

The album was recorded in a New York studio following the "rebel" Newport
festival at Cliff Walk Manor. Mingus plays on only the 3 tracks of Nov.1,
1960 (Mysterious Blues, Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams, Me and You). John
"Peck" Morrison is bassist on the other 2 tracks, recorded Nov. 11, 1960
(Cliff Walk, 'Taint Nobody's Bizness If I Do).

Nat Hentoff's thorough liner notes describe notable happenings during the
recording: Roy Edridge recorded with Mingus for the first time, on all 3
Mingus cuts; Jo Jones and Max Roach played drums simultaneously on the same
tune, Cliff Walk; and Abbey Lincoln produced one of her best vocal
performances, on Taint Nobody's Bizness.

Other personnel on the album: Eric Dolphy, Jimmy Knepper, Tommy Flanagan,
Booker Little, Julian Priester, Walter Benton, Benny Bailey, and Kenny
Dorham.

Almost all of the music was improvised during the recording. Fine, fine
album.

Several years ago the then-owners of Candid released several CD's made
up of alternate takes. I believe that "Reincarnation of a Lovebird" and
"Mysterious Blues" are among them. I never picked them up, since I
already had the tracks on the Mosaic set, and, my sources told me, the
sound was superior on the Mosaic.

Esa Ontonnen's Mingus discography
(http://webusers.siba.fi/~eonttone/mingus ) lists the tracks:

Reincarnation Of A Lovebird (Take 1) (6:58)
Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams (Take 4) (3:55)
(Moll/Koehler/Barris)
R & R (Take 1) (11:51) (Eldridge/Brown)
Body And Soul (Take 2) (13:51) (Green)
Bugs (Take 3) (8:28)

_Mysterious Blues_:
Mysterious Blues (8:35)
Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams (3:48) (Moll/Koehler/Barris)
Body And Soul (10:41) (Green)
Vasserlean (6:38)
Reincarnation Of A Lovebird (9:13)
Me And You Blues (9:54) (Eldridge/Mingus/Flanagan/Jones)
Melody From The Drums (9:25) (Richmond)
"This is an unauthorized recording according to The Real Mingus
Web"

_Newport Rebels_:
Mysterious Blues (8:35) (Mingus)
Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams (3:49) (Moll/Koehler/Barris)
Me And You (9:46) (Eldridge/Mingus/Flanagan/Jones)
(and other non-Mingus tracks)

I saw _Newport Rebels_, _Mingus Presents Mingus_, and one other
(_Reincarnation_?) at Tower a couple of years ago, but, like an
idiot, didn't buy them. I suppose I could wait until a used copy
of the Mosaic set shows up at Stereo Jack's :-)
