I read in the liner notes of the Alligator Records Anniversary
compilation that SRV played on record (separately) with AC Reed
and Lonnie Mack. I'm also lead to believe that he played on David
Bowie's "Let's Dance". (Hearing that song prompted this question)

Anyway, are there any SRV collaborations/appearances on CD that
I should be on the lookout for in my travels?

I'll post a summary if there's any interest.
Thanks!

I have both of the Alligator discs that you describe. On the A.C. Reed
disc SRV only plays on two cuts but one of them is pretty good. It
sounds much like his solo material. The rest of the disc isn't all
that good IMHO. The Lonnie Brooks disc is pretty good. I don't recall
how many cuts he plays on but the disc as a whole is pretty good. I
read a interview with SRV awhile back and he mentioned that disc as
a influence to some his later material.

SRV shares guitar duties with Lonnie Mack and Lonnie's brother on
Strike Like Lightning from Alligator. Some good blues/rock. Contains
the humorous Oreo Cookie Blues. Check it out.

It's true that he did play with Bowie on this album.

SRV played on AC Reed's Album _I'm in the Wrong Business_ and on
Lonnie Macks _Strike Like Lightnin_.

As for Bowie yes he played on the Album, the story is that bowie was
him at the Montroux Jazz Festival in 82 or so (before Stevie had any
albums out) and signed him on the spot to play guitar on the album.

One cut from the Above mentioned Jazz festival is avalable on the
album _Blues Explosion_.

If you are refering to _Wound Up Tight_ by Lonnie Brooks the guest
guitarist on two of the cuts is Johnny Winter not SRV (still a good
album though).

If memory serves me right this cut (a sizzling _Texas Flood_) is
also available on the Atlantic Blues Guitar album as well. And,
now that I think of it, it is also on Stevie's Live Alive
(It has a live version of Texas Flood for sure, but I think it is
the same cut from the festival).

BTW, does anyone know if _Blues Explosion_ is available on CD.
It has the most sizzling version of Koko Taylor's Wang Dang Doodle.

Deepak.

I read your article, and went through and checked the responses. So far they
all seem to be on the mark. SRV did play on the Jenifer Warnes, david bowie,
a.c. reed, and lonnie mack (strike like lightning, alligator) albums. I play
guitar, and have a transcription book that gives a complete discography, but
one of my students has it now. I do remember, thought that srv also played on
"living in america" by james brown, and a few other things, mostly
soundtracks. But more importantly, I have seen a few bootlegs with him playing
with some other musicians. I saw one where he was playing with buddy guy in
1984, and one where he played with jeff beck. the beck one had pretty weak
sound, but the playing was spectacular, and the buddy guy sold before i could
raise the thirty five bucks to buy the cd. I also saw a videotape of him
playing with jeff beck on a short lived show on mtv called "bootleg mtv" and
the sound was great, so that is probably booted somewhere. i would recomend
getting a copy of gold mine magazine at a newstand, and all of this stuff will
be available at the extortionate mail-order bootleg prices. if anyone wants
the discography i mentioned, or wants to trade taped srv boots, please e-mail
me.

btw, if you are interested in srv alone bootlegs, you are in luck. almost all
of the ones i have found (save the previously mentioned one with jeff beck)
have sounded terrific. In particular, i recomend one called "the last child"
on lobster records (spanish import) and one called "the last farewell" on the
swinging pig records. The first is an l.a. club show and has the best version
of little wing I have ever heard, including those by hendrix, and the second
is a show from the in step tour that sounds better than the live alive record.
hope all of this helped, e-mail of you like.
take it easy

Add TWILIGHT TIME by Bennie Wallace (Blue Note, CPD 7 46293 2).

I think you are mistaken. I believe the live alive cuts that are from the
festival are from 2 years or so later from his second trip to the festival
(after he had become a ``star'').

Don't know, it was a digital recording though. As for Koko have you
listened to her live album _Audience with the Queen_ She does Wang Dang
Doodle on that album as well.

It appears on the Altantic Blues Guitar compilation cd. It is a 10+
minute version of Texas Flood. It really smokes - it is an
encyclopedia of Blues Licks. There are also a lot of other great tunes
on this disk. Check it out.

Correct! There is a *sizzling* version of Texas Flood on the Atlantic
Blues: Guitar disc. However, it is *not* the same version as is on
"Live Alive". The version on "AB:G" is much better!
BTW, it's (incorrectly) called "Flood down in Texas" on that CD.
