I have a Sheila Jordan's "the crossing", a very nice album, in
which Tom Harrell trumpet playing as side man. His sound is pensive
but graceful, very distinctive yet humble. There was a interview
by Downbeat, revealing that he had endured some spiritual crises
years before and how he recovered from it. Can any one who has
collection of his albums make a comment? and what album would you
think is worth buying?(assuming that I have coins enough to buy one.)
Much obliged!

Harrell has been diagnosed as schizophrenic. His mood can swing from
extreme paranoia over the most trivial things to extreme passivity.
Playing jazz probably helps him, because it can help to focus his mind on
positive things. In anycase, you have to admire him for overcoming that
illness to the extent he does.

He is on a recent album of Philip Catherine called I Remember You which is
dedicated to Chet Baker. In fact, there is a Chet Baker album in which
it sounds like Chet was sitting in with Phil Woods, and Chet and Harrell
play together. Harrell used to play in Phil Woods band, so there is
probably some good records of him with Phil. In record stores, I see
a lot of his records on small labels.

He has a few recent albums out, one on Chesky. Unfortunetly, I can't
remember the names. Another is with Lovano and Haden and
Motian.

I have one entitled "Heaven". I don't think Tom really fit in to that group -
he was not nearly "slick" enough, too harsh, not straightahead bop enough.
Which would normally be a good thing to say about someone, but it does make him
stick out like a sore thumb playing with Phil Woods and Hal Galper.

I recently picked up Tom Harrell's SAIL AWAY album, on Contemporary.
It deserves more listenings than I've given it so far, so these
comments are preliminary. It's quite good, Harrell plays very well
and the pieces are challenging, in the Woody Shaw mode of heady,
complex post-bop writing. My only gripe on the album is that the
contributions of guitarist John Abercrombie lend a slick, processed
texture that I feel detracts from the immediacy of the music. But
it's a fine album, with some burning playing by Harrell and Joe
Lovano. I recommend it.

Yeah, I forgot all about this one. Pretty hard to find. The tune "Five" is
not your typical rhythm changes tune, either - it is 5/4 superimposed on 4/4,
with something like 9/8 superimposed for the bridge. Wild. It's in the fake
book "Think Of One" that I've mentioned before, but don't know how to get
unless you are in Berkeley, where you can probably scare up a copy from someone
at the UC Jazz Ensembles.

BTW, Bill playes a Rhodes electric piano on some of the cuts of "WWMA". I'm
not sure why; it was hardly novel in 1979, it doesn't add anything in my
opinion, and it robs us of precious minutes listening to his touch on the real
piano (even if Cecil Taylor thinks it is all in the recording engineering).
Unfortunately, I don't have the album; I've only listened to a friend's copy,
so I can't even easily check the liner notes to see if they say anything about
it.
