Also, I'm fairly new to jazz, and I wanted to get a Mingus CD. Any
recommendations as to which one I should get. I heard a little of
Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, and I thought it was good. Any
other titles for the beginning jazz listener?

This is the primary general-interest jazz newsgroup. There is also
rec.music.makers.jazz, which is for technical discussions of the music
among musicians, and rec.music.makers.guitar.jazz, for guitar players
specifically. Jazz is also discussed in some of the various
instrument-specific newsgroups, and there is an alt.big-band or
something like that too.

That's a good one, sure enough. Without knowing anything about your
background, I'd say it;s as good as any.

You might want to check out my "Jazz Improvisation Primer", the chapter
called "A Brief History Of Jazz", for some recommendations.

There is Rec.music.makers.jazz which although it is for musicians to
trade shop talk....they do occasionally talk about things that are
non-technical
and understandable by ordinary people.
There is as well Fr.rec.arts.musique.jazz from France but unfortunately
it is patronized by people who speak only French....< G >
There are also discussion groups within web sites but I would leave it
to someone else to explain how you might access these.
Your best bet is probably Rec.music.bluenote
