Thanks,
David

Abdullah Ibrahim & Ekaya, _African River_. A 1989 Enja recording.

On a related note, is anyone else blown away by Brian Abrahams' drum
work on the first track of African River, "Toi-Toi"? Well, ok, the
whole rhythm section on the first track. I've never heard a groove
like that anywhere else.

In addition to 'Water from an ancient well', it also appears, in what I
believe to be a slightly superior version, on 'African River'(1989,
Enja).

Apropos of Abdullah Ibrahim: I have a strong sense
of cognitive dissonance when comparing his solo
piano recordings/performances with his trio/quartet
outings. It almost seems like there are two
different players. The ensemble Ibrahim seems
sometimes almost wilfully sparse, which makes the
groove dynamic and subtle on a good night, and
soporific on a bad. The solo Ibrahim seems to thrive
on filling in empty space with astonishing
cross-rhythms, wild gospel-ish harmonies and
those incredible tremolo chords that sound like
the whole piano is rocking back and forth.

I sometimes wish he'd play like that when he's got
a drummer & bassist. When there are soloists but
no rhythm section he's fairly busy (as witness the old
trio lp w/Don Cherry & Carlos Ward), but otherwise it's
mostly empty space. Don't get me wrong, I love
empty space -- it just seems like his playing has
only two "states": empty and full, and nothing in
between. His early records, like the trio dates on
Gallo w/Victor Ntoni and Louis Moholo, are somewhat
fuller in piano sound; he's playing closer to his
solo style. But we haven't heard him do anything like
that in years.

My personal solo piano favorite, BTW, is "Ancient
Africa" -- weird piano sound and all. What an incredible
record!

Doesn't this wonderful song appear also on "African Marketplace?" To
my ears, this is the most magical AI record of all featuring wild,
braying bone from Craig Harris and the magical banjo and guitar of
Lawrence Lucie (right, THAT Lawrence Lucie!).

Axe,

"The Wedding" appeared on the album "Anthem for the New Nations" long
before 1986 (1978, in fact) and I can't swear that was his first
recorded version.
