hi all,

Just picked up Joe Henderson's _Double Rainbow: the Music of Antonio
Carlos Jobim_ (Verve). This album was planned well before Jobim's
death, and he was scheduled to play on it - but his health problems
prevented him from doing so. The album features 2 groups: a
Brazilian group with Eliane Elias (p), Oscar Castro-Neves (g),
Nico Assumpcao (b) and Paulo Braga (d); and a "New York" group
featuring Hancock, McBride and DeJohnette - with one duet with
Herbie and one with McBride. Haven't really had a chance to
listen to it yet, but now y'all know it's out there.

I don't recommend it! At least after a first listening, Henderson seems
woefully out of place doing this material. Perhaps it was thought to be
commercially viable.

In article <3lec2e$1...@newsbf02.news.aol.com>,

It got 4 out of 4 stars in our local newspaper review last week. Perhaps
it is commercially viable. I haven't hears it yet myself.

Here's my 2p worth - it's a superb recording of memorable tunes played
in two different contexts - one Brazilian, the other more Jazz-oriented.
The performances are wonderful and the interplay between the musicians
is clearly evident.

Oh and by the way, perhaps I should qualify my comments on this - I have
listened to this album many, many more times than just one listening, and
I didn't need to read the reviews for this to decide whether this album is 'good'
or not. I coughed up the money and made my own mind up.

: How does it compare, as a misfire Jobim anthology, with
: Ella's ELLA ABRACA JOBIM (Pablo)? I bought that recently, with
: a great deal of excitement since I'm a Jobim nut, and, whew!,
: was it BAD! And I LOVE Ella! My wife and I just couldn't
: make it through a cut without hitting the "skip" button on the
: cd player! We decided that the queen of swing is definitely a
: handmaiden of bossa. We had to throw ELIS AND TOM on the
: player right away to reset our bossa equilibrium....

Not so fast. On her Montreaux '75 album, Ella does great jazz versions of
both
"The Girl From Ipanema" and "Wave". On Montreaux '77, I love her "One Note
Samba". Both albums feature the Tommy Flanagan trio. I haven't heard
"Ella Abraca Jobim", but I have heard from others that it wasn't that good.

Yeah, her "One-Note Samba" at Montreaux '77 is KILLER, which
is another reason I was excited about ABRACA. I'll have to
get a hold of the '75 stuff. I think on ABRACA she/they were
making a conscious effort to do the tunes differently, which
is fine, but it just didn't work out well.
