I'm crazy about music and I also have a liking to music that is a fusion
of Indian and Western instruments.

Some of my favorite "fusers" of east & west would be:
Don Cherry/Codona
Miles Davis (_On the Corner_, _Big Fun_-- great sitar & tabla, purist
be damned!)
Pharoah Sanders
McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Shakhti)
As far as fusing rock & jazz, that'd be
Miles (soi-disant "degenerate"-era)
Tony Williams Lifetime (w/Larry Young only, please)
Last Exit
early Weather Report (first 2, esp)
These could be useless to you, as I've barely heard of the folks you
mention (except for Spyro Gyra)
Jason Witherspoon
The band that I think has been one of the hippest fusion groups
to arrive in the last 10 years or so is Scott Henderson and Tribal Tech.
Scott has also played with Joe Zawinal's (sp) Weather Update, and
Chick Corea's Elektric band. He writes great tunes and the playing is
ferocious. It bear's no resemblance to the "fuzak" that you hear on
"smooth jazz" stations and TV soundtracks, just to warn you.

While we are on spelling, it's R-O-B-B-E-N Ford. I had to look at his
record a few times to remember that.

More power to ya !!!
Miles, Weather Report, RTF, etc circa early to mid 70's is among my
favorite music.
I feel fortunate to have been able to see most of em live ....at the
height of their powers. It was good music and very spiritual as well.
I say damm the "critcs" as well
Peace
