Hi Bill! I usually save vocalists for a separate show but I share your
taste for creative vocalists.

I got a fair amount of follow-up mail to the posted list in addition to
Bill's list of
Marilyn Mazur percussionist
Zeena Parkins, harp,
Tenko Ueno, guitar
Iva Bittova violin

(I know some of Ita Bittova's vocal work but I'm not familiar with her
violin playing).

I had her as Margie Hyams in the original list, in the Bird film when
Bird is leaving the stage (I think it's when he was being hassled by the
narcs) [some representation of] Margie Hyams band is just taking to the stage.
There's a French RCA (Black and White series) album called Greatest
of the Small Bands Vol. 2 which features some of her playing from the 40's
with Mary Lou Williams and Mary Osbourne.

Check out her smokin' debut album on enja called Straight Ahead with
Ray Anderson and Ronnie Burrage. She really gives the bass pedals
a good workout while playing some tasty barbeque.

Kathleen Thomas violin [Ebony String Quartet]
Gail Thompson baritone sax [British]
Annie Whitehead trombone [see Brotherhood of Breath]

Somebody over in .misc reminded me of Rory Block who played on the old
Kicking Mule How to Play Blues Guitar albums with Stefan Grossman and
has had an extensive picking history since. [I've got a hole in my sock!]

I think I can give at least some recording pointers to just about
all the artists I named. I'll certainly keep compiling a list for as
long as I get replies.

Has noone mentioned Charo yet? She is supposed to be an excellent flamingo
guitarist. At least she won best flamingo guitarist a few years ago in
"Guitar Player". That is a magazine that picks people based on talent,
unlike "The Rolling Stone" ,etc.

That's spelled "flamenco", not "flamingo". A flamingo is a bird.
Flamenco guitar has absolutely nothing to do with the flamingo

I still have not seen anyone mention Anne Bourne, who played electronic
keyboards in Jane Siberry's band up to and including the album
The Walking. Siberry's latest album feature a slightly different band.

Here in Boston, there are a number of great female players who hopefully will
get some more recognition. At least one, Deborah Henson-Conant, has signed
with GRP and released her first album last year.

Deborah Henson-Conant

She books herself as "Jazz Harp Trio", which is exactly that, herself on harp
(the big thing, not a harmonica) a bassist and drummer, and once in a while she
expnads to add saxophone, etc. She also sings, and has released some
children's tapes of lullabies that are quite interesting. Her GRP album, "On
The Rise" puts a bit too much New Age veneer on her sound, she *can* play
stnadrads and swing with the best.

Cercie Miller

Cercie is an alto saxophonist who was a founding member of the Boston based
Your Neighborhood Saxophone Quartet , plays occasionally with the Jazz Harp
Trio and also played in the all-female rock band Girl's Night Out. But
mainstream jazz is her thing, and her quartet has been making the rounds in
Boston. She swings hard and is gradually developing an original voice.

Myanna

Myanna Pontoppidan (she doesn't use her last name professionally for obvious
reasons) is another Girl's Night Out alumnus. She is a tenor player rooted in
both jazz and R&B. Her own band, which she formed this year, plays fusion
stuff in the vein of David Sanborn. Two of her sidepersons are also women,
Alison Lissance on keys and Kathy Burkly, a powerhouse of a drummer. Her band
is starting to appear regularly at the Tam in Brookline, MA and has begun to
get some booking at Ryles, the main jazz venue in Cambridge.

I'd like to go ahead and mention two women I saw in Atlanta in the
last few years: Meredith Monk and Nurit Tillis(sp?). They played mostly as
a duet, each playing a piano which was facing the other, with the tops removed
to facilitate the performers' line of sight, mic placement, etc. Meredith
also performed some of her solo voice pieces which I found to me some of the
most extrordinary music I've ever heard.

Let's not forget Joan Armatrading, an excellent guitarist/composer/vocalist!
If you haven't heard her, do yourself a favor and buy one of her albums.
Suggestions for a first purchase? Try her first, simply called _Joan
Armatrading_ or her latest (a year+ old) _The Shouting Stage_.

And DEFINITELY see this woman in concert if you get the change.
She is truly fantastic.

Uh... this person is not a woman. At least he wasn't the last time I saw
his picture on an alblum cover. Of course in this day and age with modern
medical advances...

I know of a pianist here on the West Coast who started life out as a man. He
married and had a couple of children. He was very unhappy and decided that
he was not straight but gay. He then divorced and proceded to lead a gay
life-style. When he found that this did not bring him happiness, he then
decided that he was really a woman living in a man's body, and thus had a sex
change operation. Now that this person had become a woman, time passed and she
found that this did not bring happiness. She then decided that she was not a
straight woman, but was instead a lesbian! Since then she has not found
happiness and goes back and forth between women and men.

This person is one of the promeninent jazz pianists here on the West Coast.

BTW, I only know her play with Defunkt. Any info on her will be

OK, maybe this is rather a trivial game to be playing, but I am surprised
that Marion McPartland's name has not come up in this thread. Less
surprisingly, US readers may not be acquainted with Barbara Thompson,
who plays sax and leads an excellent band in the UK. I have not heard her
lately. She is married to Jon Hiseman, who aceived brief fame in the early
seventies as leader of Colisseum and, I understand, now plays drums in her
band. Try and catch her act if you're in London.
