He plays an electric upright 5 string bass (EADGC), has since the 1970s.
Might be the first cat who played anything other than salsa on that
instrument. Brilliant, virtuoso, known for his compositions as well as
his playing.
I have nearly every album he's ever appeared on. "The Following Morning"
accompanies me on all my out of town trips. "Orchestra" is also a
masterpiece, as is "The Colors of Chloe". If you want to hear him as a
sideman, then listen to Pat Metheny's "Watercolors" album or Gary Burton's
"Passengers" albums (both avail. on CD). The latter includes Steve
Swallow--two bassists on each cut, and they never get in each other's way
even though they're both known as soloists.
All atmospherically intense and sparsely eloquent. Don't expect to hear
walking bass, though.

Check out his section at http://www.ecmrecords.com
He also did some great work with Gary Burton ("Passengers" rings a bell.)

Better than hearing "Lady Day", or checking in at Monterey...

Soft-headed mush produced with an excess of electricity. ECMy pink-and-lace
type of music. *Absolutely* nothing to do with jazz.

I have loved his playing since I first heard it decades ago. He was
trained as a classical cellist, and his approach is a blend of
classical and jazz.
Besides "The Following Morning", I am especially fond of "Yellow
Fields".
He has been working with Jan Garbarek in recent years, but finally has
a new recording of his own (I haven't bought it yet).

He is better as a sideman, not just with ECM but with United Jazz + Rock
Ensemble.

But he always comes back the following week for more of the "dreaded
deading"--just like Zeddy.

"NewAge" and "mood music" are probably very good descriptions of what Weber
does, which is *definitely* not jazz; to be fair, though, very little of
what ECM produces is jazz. And last two decades of "no excitement" from his
also seems to be spot on --- and I wouldn't shed any tears about that. (By
the way, isn't there a group for New Age music?)

An apt self-decription.
